Quoting - How to

Recommended Posts

Sometimes when you want to reply to another users post it can be helpful for others to see the context in which you are responding, it's not always helpful to quote the entire post you wish to reply to, so this is where the quote button can become helpful to quote the section you wish to respond to.

There are several ways to achieve this.

Option 1
To copy and paste the part of the text you wish to quote, then simply manually type the quote code around this text.
The text you wish to quote here.
Which would display this:

Quote

The text you wish to quote here.

The only problem with this method is whilst it quotes the text fine, it does not show who made the original quote or link back to it.

Option 2
Looking at the post you wish to quote, using your cursor highlight the section of text you wish to quote in your reply, and within a second or two a 'Quote this' box will appear, simply click that and a new reply window will open with the select piece of text in the window ready for you to respond to.

That displays the following:

The non technical summary, the forums had to move house which meant packing everything up, moving and unpacking.  The WWW then had to catch up with our move of address, so even after I had unpacked, the ‘change of address’ card had not fully reached the WWW.

This is by far the best way to quote, because it ensure other people can see exactly which part of text you are responding about, who you are replying to and where the original text came from with a blue link icon back to the original post.

Option 3
Simply click the blue quote text link at the bottom right of each post.  Like option 2 above this does include the full details of who and where you are quoting from, but the problem with this method is it includes the entire post, rather than selected text from it.   This is fine for small posts, but if it is a large post then readers may not be clear which piece of text you are quoting and commenting on.  So for context, try and delete from within the quote the parts you are not referring to.

Option 4 - Multiquoting
This one is a combination of the above step, but let's say there is a particularly busy topic and you wish to make a reply which quotes several posts from within it. You could simply quote and reply to each post one at a time, but sometimes you want to reply on the same subject and keep several quotes within your one reply. For this, at the bottom right of each post you will see a small 'X' icon. clicking that for each post you wish to quote will turn that into a checkmark, and a small window appears showing how many posts will be quoted. Which you are good to go, simply click the 'quote 2 posts' button.

You are not limited to two posts, you can quote multiple posts.    Like above, we recommend removing the parts of the quote that are not relevant for your response.

Summary
To Quoting is important because it allows the rest of the forum to see the exact context in which your response was made.   If you need help in using these features please do let us know by posting in the technical support forum.
