Advocacy Help

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Hope you have had a good weekend.  Mine was rough.  I am having trouble getting help fro the NHS.  I know loads of people who have OCD are having the same problem.  I've had two rounds of "CBT" from the NHS, but they knew very little about OCD.  I am trying to get a referral to the OCD centre in Bristol, but need advocacy help.  My GP has tried his best to get me additional support: mental health team, CPN, etc.  None of them said I qualified because I'm not really going to kill myself or go insane.  Can OCD UK help?

Thanks.

Jennifer

Hi Beth and Ashley,

I found out today that my application to be treated at CADAT has been denied.  I'm gutted. Is there anything more I can do?  Is it possible to get some help with Advocacy?

Thanks,

Jennifer

Hi Jennifer. Denied on what grounds?

Hi.  I'm not sure.  I received a letter to contact my GP.  I have an appointment on Monday.  I asked if she could look in my file and see what the decision was.... denied.  They have recommended I be seen at Trafford in Manchester.  I'm in Bolton.

I used to live in Bolton. Little Lever. Not massively interesting but true all the same!

Have you spoken to the Citizen's Advice Bureau about this issue?

I know it well.

There must be an appeals process. Ask your GP for a printed copy of the reasons for their decision and take it along to the CAB. I'd request an appointment now as they tend to be rather hectic. Good luck.

I'd say the country side is the only real plus to living here.  LOL.

Thanks for the advise.  I'll ring tomorrow.  Cheers.

Actually I was strolling along Bradshawgate a few weeks ago. Oh the nostalgia!

You're very welcome.

Hi Jennifer,

Just to say I've been through what you're going through with the rejected funding application.  I didn't quite understand why you had applied to CADAT and are applying for Bristol (Bath?) as well?

If you've had 2 rounds of CBT it sounds like getting more specialist treatment should be justifiable to your CCG - they are the ones who have to agree to "out of county" funding.  (NHS England pay for the most serious cases but the criteria are mega strict).

I don't know what it is about Trafford that made them suggest you go there...

Do you actually want to go to CADAT or to Bath?  I had an assessment at CADAT which was really good.

Hope this has helped a bit.  We need better services in the north west!  Write to your MP!

I live in the northwest and I did just that when confronted with an 18 month wait for therapy. My MP wrote to the CMHT head who assured him that 18 months was typical and therefore I had no reason to feel aggrieved. My MP refused to pursue it further. You know when you feel the point has been missed..?

Hi All,

Sorry for the delay.  Just got back from OCD support group.  I may be getting Bristol and Bath confused.  I do want to go to CADAT.  Did you eventually get your application approved?  Did you get an advocate involved?  I hope you have found some good treatment.

I'm not sure what they are proposing at Trafford.  I suppose it would save them money to keep in with in Greater Manchester.  I will find out more on Monday.

Thanks for all of your responses.

I have replied to your email of yesterday Jenkijunki.  But yes just for clarity CADAT is London based (Centre for Anxiety Disorders and Trauma (CADAT) based at the Maudsley Hospital).

The treatment clinic in the south west run by Professor Salkovskis is now based at the University of Bath (used to be Bristol based clinic) and is called the specialist anxiety and related problems clinic.  Similar names but are different services/clinics.

Hi Ashley. Many Thanks!  I just replied to your email.  I really do appreciate your time ;D  It is the one in Bath I am hoping to go to. I have been calling it CADAT.  Sorry for the confusion. Jen
