LIVE webinar with Prof Adam Radomsky (8th March)

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

As mentioned a little while ago we are launching some live webinars with OCD specialists, and the first launches next month on Wed 8th March (6-7pm'ish) with Canadian OCD specialist Professor Adam Radomsky.

The webinar's are open to anyone with an interest in learning more about OCD. Access is by ticket registration, which is free of charge for OCD-UK members (although due to limited space you will need to register to reserve your spot). There is a small charge for non-members (the software costs us close to £1000, so we have to try and fund the project).

I have created a website to promote the webinar and for people to register (OCD-UK members must still register even though the tickets are free, it will ask you to add to cart and complete a checkout process, but you will not be charged).

The webinar website is: http://www.ocdwebinar.org

For those signing up, Adam has offered to talk about any subject, but made the following suggestions that could include one or more (but not all) of the following:

  1. Meaning and OCD
  2. Intrusive thoughts, obsessions (overlaps with #1)
  3. Doubting, checking and memory in OCD
  4. Contamination, mental contamination (new approaches)
  5. How to know if you’re receiving good CBT, what to ask for, etc.

So for those signing up, please do feel free to post about what you want to hear about. If there is a consensus I will ask him to talk about that subject.

I dont think there's much 'out there' about false memory so it would be good if this could be asked

It would indeed be helpful to have such a well-respected specialist pronounce there is no such thing as 'false memory'.

Only intrusive thoughts that feel like memories.

Maybe if he says it people will listen! I seem to fail miserably in getting the message across. (Sorry Jess, I know you're just using the term because that's how it's commonly referred to. One of my current 'crusades' is to enlighten people on terminology.)

Anyway, I'd be happy to hear Prof Radomsky's thoughts on this too. :)

If there's a good turn out at this webinar maybe we can persuade him to talk again (in 6 months or so?) to discuss whatever topics there aren't time for in March.

Hi Ashley

Is it possible to ask about false memory? How and why it happens in OCD? It's something I  (and a few others) have dealt with and at one point I got really down about because I could never be certain this wasn't a real memory even though part of me knew it wasn't real but I couldn't get the certainty I wanted.

I dont think there's much 'out there' about false memory so it would be good if this could be asked

Thanks

Jess

I think you're attributing too much importance to the obsession. OCD will get you 'every which way'.

Which is why it will be interesting to hear the cognitive solutions the Prof has to suggest, don't you think? :)

Help people learn how to stop giving their thoughts such importance.

Exactly Snowbear.  it's too easy for us to say you're giving too much important to the obsessions or ignore the OCD, it's the 'how?' that people need to understand and anything that can help us learn strategies that may lead us being able to do the aforementioned can only be beneficial.

Snowbear I didn't know it was an intrusive thought that feels like a memory. I knew my mind was playing tricks but I never seen it in the way u described so thanks for that I'd also like to hear cognitive solutions too :a1_cheesygrin:

Thank you. That's immensely helpful to me today. I didnt realise that either.

Snowbear and I did a test run with Adam last night, and after a few technical blips we had to iron out with the audio, all seemed to work fine and he came across loud and clear from Canada, even Snowbear in deepest darkest Wales could hear him :D. I am really looking forward to it, and I know Adam is, with us both being webinar virgins.... it could all go horribly wrong on the night :a1_cheesygrin:

The subjects Adam will be discussing are:

  • Meaning and OCD.. looking at the cognitive aspect about the meaning we associate with our OCD thoughts
  • Contamination, mental contamination (new approaches)
  • What we call 'False Memory', but not a term Adam is keen on and he will explain why... could be controversial :)

and then he will take about 30 minutes of questions.

We still have space, to register please visit http://www.ocdwebinar.org  (FREE for OCD-UK members, but please don't confuse this with forum membership).

Hi Ashley,

I just wanted to clarify -- is the webinar at 6p.m. GMT or EST (the information at www.ocdwebinar.org says GMT but the countdown seems to be for EST)?

It's 6pm UK time, I think Adam said that's 1pm his time in Montreal. The countdown seems to be correct this end, in that it is correctly showing it due to end at 6pm on Wednesday UK time, the settings for the countdown are that it's set to use the timezone for the site (which should be GMT).

So to clarify it is due to start at 6pm GMT/ British time next Wednesday.   I can try and post on here prior to the start if that would help?

Webinars are a brilliant way to present to a wide audience through the world wide Web. Yoy have to register to "attend"  then login at the time with your provided Id to watch.

It's great that the charity has invested funds in the software to roll out presentations in this format.

I would recommend people avail themselves of this opportunity to hear a world -renowned specialist in OCD.

It's the first one so why not take part in history, a wonderful development in the service our charity strives to provide to sufferers their friends and family.

Hi @Ashley

This may sound like a silly question but what exactly is a webinar? And how does it work?

Thanks

Jess

A webinar is basically a live conference presentation, but instead it is online allowing users to access the presentation from the comfort of home where they can sit back and listen to the presenter (Adam), view him on webcam and look at his PowerPoint slides. There is also a box to type questions, which only me and Adam can see, so it's pretty anonymous.

So when you login to the webinar page via our Adobe Connect page you will see a screen more or less like this (without my silly drawing and the chat text etc. This was from our test last night.

Webinar-test2.jpg

So you will be able to see the presenter live via their webcam (nobody else can be seen), and the presenter controls the PowerPoint so it is almost exactly like being at a conference.   Although the only microphone enabled is the speakers.

In terms of being anonymous if you type a question the name used when registering for the webinar will be shown, unless you used an alias like Snowbear did.  If anybody used their real name and needs me to change it I can, just email me.  But in theory if you just watch and don't ask questions then your username is now shown to anyone but Adam and myself.  I can see whose logged in, and if I needed to I could in theory enable a users microphone.

(Those registered for the webinar should have an email from Adobe with your username, password and the meeting link).  if you did not get those please message me.   If you wanted to test your login works please do so, you will see a screen like this if it works ok.

P.S.  Just to advise I have disabled my tag alerts, so basically I wont get them unless I stumble upon them on a thread, otherwise I will get hundreds each day.

I'm really looking forward to it. To be able to listen to one of the top specialists in the world and ask questions in real time is a super-duper rare and wonderful opportunity. :)

I've attended several webinars before and in case anyone is unsure about how they work, I'd like to reassure you on some points that worried me before my first one.

- complete anonymity. You can use your forum username if you prefer

- you can't be seen or heard. Only the presenter and host (Ashley) have video and microphone rights.

- you can type questions for the presenter to answer in real time , allowing a two way discussion if you have a further point to raise or clarify.

- it's like being at a real conference with a front row seat

- there's no obligation to say (type) anything. You can just listen and go if you want without asking questions.

Still tickets left. Still time to book yours. :)

Ashley, I'll also post here and on the status update area an hour before it starts on Wednesday 8th so there are some visible reminders on the forum.

It sounds really good I hope I get to attend! It's at 6pm isn't it? My sons bedtime is between 6 and 6.30pm so hopefully I won't miss too much xx

You could try and fool your son that the clocks have gone forward three weeks early this year :a1_cheesygrin:

They could, but they probably won't.

I think this is absolutely the right way forward, and there will always be some uncertainty with completely new technology.

More places folks - the charity is making history here, and with a brilliant first seminar to boot.

Roll up roll up, sign up now for a terrific session and to be part of history.
