Wonderer
Technically agraphobia doesn't mean u can't leave ur house, sometimes u can go short distances in safe zones and out with other people, but I do think David this is more about u being afraid because of ur intrusive thoughts, u need to face those fears head on and then u won't be afraid to go far from home.x Link to comment
Guest David green
I did panic going down one road i had builders staring at me its so embarrassing as i look so scared then i see school kids coming out a door and was just more scared. Its really horrible being like this. Link to comment
PhilM
Obviously I'm not a professional and this is just my opinion but you might be able to control the panic in the waiting room or elsewhere with a simple breathing exercise called the 7-11 technique (although it is quite a common technique called other things) I read about and has helped me at times of panic: Take slow deep breathes right down to the bottom of your lungs through the nose. The out-breath takes longer than the in-breath. You count to 7 as you breathe in and 11 as you breathe out. If you practice this daily your breathing will become more relaxed and a lot of specialists say you can't breathe like this and panic at the same time. Remember the emphasis is on the word practice. Don't give up after a few attempts. David, why should you be embarrassed at builders' or whoever "staring" at you? Why are you so bothered? Who are they to you? Why does whatever they may or may not be thinking matter? Just go about your business and don't be so concerned about what complete strangers are thinking. You are not a mind reader - they might not be thinking anything buddy! Best wishes, Phil. Link to comment

Angst
This might sound like avoidance - but if I had your type of OCD I would have left you Mum's place at six in the morning or thereabouts. There would have been no kids or very few kids about. You could take a mini cab to and back from CBT sessions - rather than paying for private visits or whatever. You could then work on your treatment with a psychologist. Hope you're feeling calmer now. Link to comment

PhilM
I doubt it. Most people I find are wrapped up in themselves when they are out. It's your thoughts which are causing your distress not your behaviour? Link to comment

PhilM
Yeah but think about it logically - people aren't going to assume that just because you look or feel nervous it has anything to do with kids. They might think "he looks upset" or "he looks like he's had a bad day". You can't predict what is going on in other people's minds. I see what I perceive as odd behaviour (I'm not talking about anxiety disorders) all the time and have thoughts but I keep them to myself. If anything, when I see people dishevelled or clearly unwell with other conditions and clearly in a bad way I feel sorry for them. I've had panic attacks in public places and clearly looked distressed and on several occasions people asked me if I was OK. It kind of restores my faith in humanity being quite a cynic. PhilM
If you don't make it to the doctor no-one is going to judge you here but try and step out of that comfort zone as scary (I know believe me) as it can feel. Once you start challenging these thoughts - with or without a therapist but obviously with the latter hopefully - you'll take them less seriously believe me. I've had this condition for over 20 years and in the past I cried bucket loads over the stuff in my mind. If you want to have a life you have to challenge some of that garbage in your mind - even laugh at the ridiculousness of it. It's not you - it's a cunning and deceitful condition. Link to comment
