If you're in Scotland Skullpops, the only specialist OCD service on the NHS is based at Dundee. I know they have inpatient options, but I am not sure I know anybody whose experienced that so I can't comment. I know they do a lot of outpatient work though, and they are good.

Access to one of the NHS specialist services in England is possible, but for patients in Scotland usually means being accessed by Dundee first (unless can get local health board to agree to fund).

Hi Ashley,

I am in Scotland. I came to the conference at the SECC and remember hearing about the services available in Dundee. Fortunately I don't require inpatient treatment at the moment but I've been admitted to hospital x5 previously when I've been in crisis due to severe OCD and major depressive disorder. I'm glad to know of the services in Dundee for future reference and to hear of other people's experiences in an acute ward and specialists services. Thanks for your reply!

Thanks for the info Ashley. I'm moving back to Scotland soon from the Midlands and had been considering going back to the ADRU at some point in the future but I wonder if the Dundee clinic might be easier.

Maybe, or you could try and get a referral to Prof Salkovskis at Bath and do some intensive work with him (outpatient) but his treatment is tailored around what you need, even if that is home based work or location work in Scotland he will come and do it there.  Only issue is there is a 10-12 month wait (once the CCG agree to fund).

Oh that sounds good actually. If I would like to be referred to Prof Salkovskis would I just ask my CMHT to refer me?

Yep, but sadly his clinic is not part of the national HSS group. So the CMHT would have to put in a convincing letter to the local CCG to get the CCG to agree to fund the treatment.... I usually recommend they lead with the fact it offers something unique, intensive therapy and home based therapy led by the man who helped develop CBT treatment for OCD.  If treatment is approved you can be seen quicker by one of the team (all of whom are fab), but you can request Paul but you may need to wait longer.

This is the link to pass to the CMHT for referral info - http://www.bath.ac.uk/psychology/mental-health-partnership/

Thanks Ashley, it sounds good but I think I might have difficulty getting a referral as I have not had any significant courses of medication so I imagine that the CMHT might not see the need to refer me!

Not a problem.  Paul's psychology based, so it's not a clinical requirement that patients have tried medication for referrals.  If the local CMHT insist you try meds first, you can either agree or reject based on personal choice... they may argue, but it's an arguable case.   The CCG may say no, they usually do, but always arguable and I don't think I have lost a case, it's more an issue of how long it takes to turn the No into a Yes!

Ok great! I think if I cannot get my OCD a bit more under control in the near future then I will ask for a referral!

Is there any 'discussion' on which specialist services do what or are deemed more helpful? Or are they considered quite equal?

I may have written at some point on various threads but goodness knows where. I do need to create something for the website on the different national services, so I will try and create a draft tomorrow or over the weekend and will post.

Thanks Ashley! Very good to see it all together. I wonder if people find any of them most helpful, altho I suppose it will be very individual.

Hi Em,

I posted on the above thread about my experience of the Anxiety Disorders Residential Unit and my assessment at the other main in-patient NHS centre Springfield University Hospital.

I have heard that the 'Centre for Anxiety Disorders and Trauma' is good but obviously it would depend on which therapist each patient is referred to!

Oh and 'The Priory' offers similar treatment to the ADRU with some of the same therapists but in a much more comfortable environment!
