I have always been an anxious person. As a kid, I had separation issues and have always had social anxiety to some degree. As I've gotten older, I have been able to subdue my anxious feelings with relative success. It's never gone away fully but it is not nearly as debilitating as it has been in the past. However, recently anxiety has taken a new form that I have never dealt with before.

I am a father of two sons whom I adore with every fiber of my being. A few weeks ago, we found out that we are expecting our third child. As happy as I am to be a dad again, a tremendous sense of anxiety has risen up inside of me ever since we found out my wife is pregnant.

Suddenly, I began thinking through past occurrences of unwanted thoughts and wondered if I was a monster for having thoughts that absolutely horrify me and make no sense to me in regards to why things like that pop into my mind. I hadn't thought much about these thoughts prior to the news. Again, I do not know why it has started now and not before.

One incident in particular that I cannot get passed in my mind happened a few months ago. My son likes back rubs when going to bed for night time. For whatever reason, one night I was rubbing his back and the thought of a woman's backside entered my mind. I didn't think much of it, as rubbing my sons back was ABSOLUTELY NOT sexual or arousing to me in any way shape or form. In no way was I responding physically or wanting to do anything with myself or to my son. I was caring for my boy and thoughts of women enter my mind frequently, so it wasn't unusual to me in it of itself.

This happened five or six times over the course of a few months until I realized that it was becoming a pattern that I DID NOT want that to be associated with caring for my son. Realizing that these thoughts were occurring more than once while rubbing his back bothered me, but it was enough for it to not happen again. I hadn't thought twice about after that.

Forward to the day we get our new baby mews. I almost immediately began feeling overcome with anxiety. The back rubs and the thoughts I had came back to me. Since then, I have been absolutely horrified at the idea that I may have used my son to have thoughts about women's butts. Again, I hadn't thought much about it when it first happened since thoughts of women pop into my mind all the time.

The fact, though, that it happened more than once while rubbing my son's back has me locked in an extremely painful cycle of anxiety and fear that I molested my son or used him to get sexual thoughts. In no way have I ever ever ever ever had a desire to hurt my children or anyone else's. I love my boys very much and the thought of doing something like that makes me sick to my stomach. I literally cannot stand the thought of it.

I don't know what to do about this. I want to talk with a counselor at a local office about this as well as other anxiety problems I have dealt with, but I don't want to be interpretted as a predator or as someone who is dengerous to my kids and then taken away. I'm not a pedophile and I have never hurt my children or wanted to.

I just want to be released from this. I've never felt so paralyzed in my life. The fear and walking through everything over and over in my mind is unbearable. I want to be a good father. What did I do? Did I hurt my son? Am I going to lose everything and go to jail?

Do you know much about OCD?

I only know as much as Google searches over the last week have provided.

I am convinced that I am dealing with OCD in some form, per what I have read so far. It seems to fit with other anxiety patterns I've noticed in my life as well.

I have decided to schedule an appointment with a local counseling office. A lot of things I've dealt with will come out, I have a feeling. This particular instance of anxiety has been the most powerful and debilitating by far. I can't live with it and want it dealt with.

I had intrusive thoughts about sexually abusing my baby when she was born 5 years ago. It was the stuff of nightmares. I understand how you are feeling and your story sounds very similar to mine. I was diagnosed with OCD. I didn't tell anyone about it for a LONG time as I thought social services would take my child away from me. they didn't of course.

Your GP if you are in England will probably offer you medication and refer you to a mental health service. To be clear though you may face a long wait before treatment. If you can afford to pay privately for therapy I'd consider it if the wait is 6 months or more. I waited and got a lot worse. You can do both, get on the waiting list and have private sessions.

Hi intheshop - if you’re going to look for your own therapist can I just recommend that you do your research and find someone who is knowledgeable about OCD. I am wary of the word ‘counsellor’ for OCD as I got referred to one when I was pregnant when my ‘checking’ went completely off the scale. Although I had never been officially diagnosed I was fairly sure it was OCD. When I got to the counsellor though she was complete confused. She tried to counsel me about having a baby, was I worried about the father feeling pushed out by the new baby (!!! Yes, that’s why I was mentally checking data in my head 24 hours a day), etc and when I suggested that I had OCD she didnt have a clue what to do with that and we parted ways. So be aware that counsellors are trained to counsel (ie help you solve real problems), but a qualified therapist trained in OCD treatment will ‘get you’ and know what to do. All the best, with the right help you can make huge progress.

Whilst we must always stress that we are unable to offer a diagnosis.....if I were a gambling woman I'd put all my money on you having OCD.

Every waking moment thoughts pass through our mind, "Must buy milk, the lawn needs mowing, hate that shirt, my foot itches, nice bum, cat needs feeding, I hate sprouts"....they flit in, they flit out and we take little notice.  Some thoughts (like need to buy milk) are relevant, others are random.  You could think of a womans bum on hundreds of occassions, and probably do.....if it happens whilst you're washing the car you wouldn;t even notice but as it happened whilst you were massaging your little boy...you noticed, you reacted and WHAM.....it's called Thought > Action > Fusion.  It's almost as simple as that.

Now because you noticed, you reacted, you don't want to have the thought....try not to have the thought....your mind sits there like a magnet, your attention is looking for it to try and stop it and so it appears again.  Hopefully, knowing why it happens, why it recurrs may help.....and the first thing you need to do is identify any compulsions (behaviours) that follow....things you do to try and stop it happening or to reduce the anxiety.  These may be many things, trying to work it out in your head, asking others for reassurance, looking things up on the internet, saying things like "Stop it, go away", avoiding being alone with your Son etc.....try and have a think what things you may do.

This is by far has been my greatest fear. I am resolved at this point that this will not be the case, but thinking about the possibility really threw my anxiety into overdrive.

Thank you, this is valid advise.

Fortunately, the local office I have access to employs therapists who specialize in anxiety related issues. I have yet to visit this office as of this morning, but I am confident that this will be a good place to start.

Much appreciated!

Yup. Pretty much sums up what I have been going through. I immediately jumped onto Google and continued to do so over and over looking for information that I thought would help me feel better. In my mind, I have been stuck in a constant cycle of what I understand now to be "checking". It has been brutal.

These last few days have been much better, as I have accepted that I have a problem and have decided to pursue professional help. I am going to see this through. Living with anxiety to that degree is absolutely maddening. I literally thought that I was going to go mad. Not joking.

I think almost everyone fears madness, going insane but you aren't and won't :)

I'm pleased to hear that you're going to seek some help but armed with some of the new knowledge you've found also start right away on the self-help route and start to work on reducing/eliminating some of the compulsions.  Good Luck
