Guest Patrick G
I feel like i have to pray for different people to be blessed, and if i say the prayer wrong i feel something bad will happen and I end up saying the prayer over and over for hours, I need some kind of reassurance of help, please Link to comment
Symps07
Hiya Patrick, This sounds very much like OCD. Have you tried talking to someone? I don't know how things work in the states, but I would go to a doctor & explain my problems, who would in turn refer me to a therapist who could help me to control the OCD. It sounds to me as though these prayers are your compulsion that you use to try & 'neutralise' your obsession, Ie, by praying you are trying to make the thoughts of harm coming to people go away or stop. Would this be right? If so, try not to pray as you are only strengthing the meaning of your original thought. Seeking reassurance is another way of trying to 'neutrlise' your OCD but is not the same as seeking help. I would definetly recommend that you see a CBT therapist, & in the meantime try to remember that this is not real, it is OCD. Confide in someone you trust (Parents, family member, etc...) & tell them how you feel. Stay strong mate, you'll get come through this :-) Link to comment
SaraJane
Hi Patrick I too have religious ocd. I agree with Symps07. Do you go to a church? - it isn't easy to find people who understand both a faith and an illness like ocd but it is always worth trying to find out - maybe there is someone in the church who understands ocd enough and who could help you alongside seeking medical support. I was 15 and a new Christian when the ocd emerged - I didn't know it was ocd and it made it difficult as I didn't know what I was dealing with. You know you are dealing with ocd and can work on the basis of it being that way rather than looking at it as a completely faith based problem. It's good you have found here and I hope you will find a way forward Sara Link to comment
Guest Patrick G
Thank you, I have a therapist but i posted this when i was freaking out, I am in between healthcare providers so right now I have very little support besides this website, thank you for responding , I am very religious so this defiantly bugs me. Symps07
It will do mate, it wouldn't be OCD if it didn't... I would recommend that you read up on OCD & it's various types though here on this website. It helps to understand it more :original: Link to comment
Phili
I had this exact OCD when I was your age and in the same way, just as you describe. And I still have religious OCD, though it plays second fiddle at the moment. Try to keep to set prayers, not your own, I don't know what religion you are, I'm Catholic and stick to my rosary and a set of pre made prayers, I used to spend hours going through my own prayers blessing everything and everyone and if I didn't do this or thought of this while saying them I would have to do it again. What you need to do is try and stick to pre made prayer and try not to repeat them, God understands, it is your OCD that does not, I know it is hard, trust me I know. Link to comment

Guest fiatver
Patrick G, What you experience is called scruples, is basically another theme of OCD. I have suffered of that and I can tell you you can recover from that. I have read a fair bit about this and the best book I found is: http://www.amazon.com/Scruples-Sainthood-Overcoming-Scrupulosity-Saints/dp/1930278969It explains everything in a very clear way.
