So, impulses/urges are normal with intrusive thoughts right?

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

So, around nine months ago I suffered from a rather frightful bout of Intrusive Thoughts which delt with many areas such as violence and what not. I went to see a specialist, and he showed me some CBT sites I could use aand basicly told me I am not crazy (Yay!). Since then I have been coping well, specifically now I have learned to just label the thoughts etc as OCD and to not give in to the reassurance compulsions. However, there is one aspect of this Intrusive Thoughts that really likes to bug my mind, and that is the odd physical sensations. For example, if I had violent intrusive thought, it could sometimes be followed by a tingle in my hand or arm, as if I want to grab something and lash out. I know that it’s just my OCD and by writing this it’s giving into a reassurance compulsion but such things are normal with intrusive thoughts, right? I just treat them like the thoughts, label them as OCD and carry on with life?

Sorry to waste your time all! :shy:

Valamist, welcome to the forum.

You bet it's OCD. An obsession is defined as an intrusive thought, image, impulse or urge that causes distress. It can also be a combination of those. So it is very normal to have, let's say, an intrusive thought about stabbing someone with a knife and a corresponding sensation in your hand/arm as if you were actually going to do it. Perfectly normal with OCD and very common.

Thanks PolarBear (Wonderful avatar by the way! :D )

That's both good to hear and terrible to see that so many suffer from this horrible aspect of the mind. For the last few days my OCD has been trying to find anything it can lay its hands on to make me worry and ruminant on, and the odd urges etc was something it latched onto quickly. Its something I should have asked the specialist more about it at the time, but thanks for clearing it up. Its funny really, you can kinda tell what I OCD an not by how quickly my worries and thoughts jump onto something else. Now its making me worry whether I am lying to my mum by not detailing every intrusive though I ever have had to hear. A particular pain, as I think the need to confessing things like that to her is my main reassurance compulsion. Still, I feel a bit stronger now! :original:
