Risperdal

Has anyone ever been given this form of medication. I was told it was an antipsychotic drug, which works well with my other tablets. I was also told it should relax me a bit.

I have noticed that I am not waking up as much during the night anymore, which is a good thing. However I have also noticed that since taking the tablets (1 every evening) my heart seems to be beating faster. Yes I would prefer to get better sleep, but I dont like the fact that my heart is beating faster. I assume it is down to the tablets, but not definate.

Has anyone had these kind of side effects or know if these are side effects to the tablets, thanks x

Try this link. There's a pdf in there listing all the known side effects.

A faster heartbeat seems to be a common thing with such medication. I was on Seropram for depression once and had happen to me.

hello smile,

i took risperdal combined with effexor xl (venlafaxine) and i had some really unpleasant

side effects - i couldn't walk fast without feeling faint and i had an intensely unpleasant feeling in my head

amongst others. i stopped taking it and went back to just venlafaxine - i take 300mg and it seems to help,

especially with lifting my optimism and mood. i just get bursts of that though, it isn't there all the time.

i think drugs are often just a handy bit of extra support, i don't think normally the docs would expect

massive improvements from drugs alone. cbt is the main thing that has helped me.

if u r getting side effects i'd say just check the notes that come with the pills and see your gp if you are

worried. i think risperdal has been around for a long time so arguably u could say it's not a new 'risky'

thing.

btw, i gather the drug companies list a lot of side effects because every time there is the smallest report they

have to add it on and do so because it covers them legally to some extent if something drastic happens.

i'm not much of a worrier when it comes to taking prescribed drugs in the uk for my ocd i think there's

more risk in other areas of life. if u can i'd stick with it for a while to make sure u give it a proper try out -

it's easy to misread normal fluctuations in symptoms etc for things that the new drug is doing sometimes i

reckon.

I do know that one or two people, myself included, have got quite agitated on Risperdal....so much for the anxiolytic effect :whistling:

In my experience the neuroleptic antipsychotic meds take a little while to adjust to before you feel settled on them.

If there is any question mark, then my specialist has always run an ECG (heart trace) just as a precaution.

Thanks for your advice. Your probably right that I should give them time to settle down as I have only been on them a week. However today I have been really shakey, which I dont know if it is down to the tablets or not. Still only waking a couple of times in night, which is good x

hello smile, have u had any improvement yet?

:original:

My daughter was on risperdal for a short while but it made her bladder incontinence worse. She did show signs of improvement though while on it regarding her fears about her hair.

ps, sorry I have only just read this thread.

Hi,

I dont have as much of a problem with my heart beating faster. Its still there, but I just dont notice it as much.

I am still not waking up as much, but when I do wake up I cant stop thinking about things. Also still waking up around 4.

I am going to stick with taking these though as I have seen a small improvement x

Hi smile,

Sorry have only just seen this thread.

After I'd been on Risperdal for a while I became very agitated. I could not sit, stand or lie still but paced up and down or rocked almost all the time.

I had some problems with going to the loo - I think I always felt the need to go (can't remember quite what this was). I also 'had' to open and close my mouth in a strange way.

I can't say for sure that these things were due to Risperdal, but when I stopped taking them, they stopped.

Hope you're having better success.

Remember if you're at all worried - go to see your doc.

Take care

hello all thanks for the risperdal info..

..maybe the mouth thing was the 'grinding teeth' they list in the side effects?

..i'm quite hopeful with my cbt at the moment but at some stage in the future if i'm still struggling i

might ask if i could try another antipsychotic one like olanzapine or something? the only reason i

gave up on risperdal was that the side-effects were just too high for me so i figure there could still be some

promise in that direction. if anyone has any experience of other antipsychotics i'd be interested to

hear..
