Hi Stu,

How long have been on the Sertraline? It can take some time for them to kick-in and begin hopefully noticing an improvement.....it depends on the person, but if you haven't felt any benefits after 6-8 weeks I'd have a word with your doctor/therapist for their thoughts.

It's not going to quit itself, wouldn't it be great if it did.....but you can work at not engaging with the thoughts and hopefully by doing so, they'll fade. The important thing is you've recognised you're obsessing, you know what's happening here, you've really just got to keep busy, stay focused on something else while letting the thoughts bombard you......but let them be there, they're just thoughts.

Twigging what's going on here so quickly also means you stand a very good chance of knocking this new obsession on the head before it takes root.

Hi Hal, ive been on the sertraline about 12 days now, its so hard to not engage as the anxiety is really really bad.

It probably feels longer with what you're going through right now, but 12 days isn't too long......the tabs should in theory eventually help with the anxiety, but they can also intially do the opposite and increase it, but I'd give them a fair shot for the next couple of weeks and go from there.

It is difficult not engaging, it takes almost superhuman willpower not to engage with the thoughts when every fibre of your being's screaming engage, ruminate, work it out.....but that's the worst thing to do. I try to remind myself I suffer from an anxiety disorder - that's the underlying problem I'm dealing with rather than the thoughts themselves which everyone experiences and are perfectly normal, natural and harmless.

I hope things settle down soon for you, I do think though that by realising what's happening here so speedily you stand a really good chance of nipping this in the bud.
