Finished Counselling Tonight

So I finished with my councilor tonight and it is a massive feeling of relief. She has been great don't get me wrong I just feel she hasn't really understood the problem with my OCD over the past while. I always feel that she was a more Freudian school of thought and thinks that there is a cause for every thought. I think counselling has made it worse over the past months as I go along weekly and drag through my OCD worries looking for reasons.

Time to fight this on my own.

It sounds like maybe you just haven't found the right support yet?

I know it took me a while to find the person I actually look forward to seeing each week and working with.

I've also had some more talking therapy types of counselling which have had their place and have been useful at times but now I'm looking more at CBT.

Have you tried any CBT?

And remember - whilst you do have to do a lot of hard work yourself - none of us are alone in this.

I did before and it worked well. My counselor has been great to be fair but with the reemergence of my OCD she hasn't really trigger the correct type of treatment. I will see how I get on doing this myself and will seek out a CBT specialist in a few weeks if it doesn't work.

You would appear right Azamour.OCD intrusions are more likely geared to the flavour of your OCD, which the counsellor appears not to grasp.

I personally think for best practice CBT the plan is usually to work out with the patient a map of the patient's particular issues then draw up goals to overcome them

An OCD workbook can help an individual map their OCD and set goals for dealing with it. You can buy one from the shop on the main OCD-UK website.

Hi Amazour

My CBT therapist does CBT with me but she also understands how my personal life affects my OCD so she listens when I tell her what is impacting on my OCD. It is like a holistic approach. She does understand OCD well. Maybe you can try and find a CBT therapist like this who will listen to your worries and help you to manage them. Mine is a clinical psychologist and is well trained. Good luck!
