NHS Morons... gotta luv them...

Recommended Posts

So i finished my treatment at The Maudsley Hospital in London, with the top BDD specialists.

I left there with a few more skills to help me cope, but still not dealing with my BDD very well. So, after a letter from my therepist at the maudsley to my GP suggesting an in-patient stay at the Bethlem, my GP then referred me to the funding panel.

the funding panel decided they want me to have a 'local' assessment!!! What the hell????? Ive just been officially diagnosed and had treatment with the top specialists, what can possibly by gained by a local assesment?

So, i agree to this, on the condition i will not talk about sepcific BDD issues. Someone called me yesterday from the place where i will have the assessment, telling me the waiting times are upto 18 weeks!!!!

I asked if they have people there who know BDD, she replied... "Im not sure. but unlikely".... and then....... she came out with the most insulting and belittling question..... "So, you are still getting BDD?" What sort of question is that???? still 'getting'????

There is only ONE possible outcome here..... no funding. They dont understand and this whole process is a joke..... ive just been seen by the people MORE qualified to deal with BDD than anyone else in the countyr, and they assign me to a moron for a *** *** assessment!!!

Well, i guess the treatment stops here, and now im on my own. Could i be any more angry right now??!!!!!

Sorry to hear that they are forcing you to get a second opinion. I have to ask, why did you set a condition that you would not talk about your BDD in the local assessment? Won't that make it more likely they won't properly diagnose you?

I hope you can fight this and get the treatment you need.

I have made this condition simply because it found it so traumatic to talk about when i started treatment at the Maudsley, that i wont go through that again with anyone less qualified than them

Hiya,

Trust me, I do understand your frustration but I am not totally sure NHS morons thread title is appropriate, after all, the people at CADAT are NHS employees too.

But that aside, don't discount local services, with all the NHS cutbacks, some of the ADRU and CADAT team were re-assigned to various local services at one time. I also work with a couple of local therapists that are actually very good, so please don't discount local treatment, sometimes you can find a good therapist.

My advice would be to not to refuse local treatment if they offer it, give them a chance (at least a couple of sessions) and then if you still feel they are not suitable to help you, again push for a formal request for the ADRU referral.

Depending on how you gained access to CADAT you may actually be able to access ADRU without local funding anyway.

Email me if you need further information or help on this. :)

Ashley.

As Ashley said, don't discount any help you can get. You left the The Maudsley Hospital seeing the top people with 'a few more skills' yet it seems your BDD has not improved much?

If you dont talk about your BDD then there's no point in getting a local assessment and seems you have made your mind up already that it wont help, but you never know it might.

Were you very open about talking about your BDD at the Maudsley?

I will not take a step backwards by having treatment with lesser experience. Having spoken with them, they do NOT have a BDD specialist, and in fact know very little about it. This appointment is to asscertain weather or not i am eligable for funding, yet they wont take the word of the specialist.

I know exactly how this will pan out, they will say NO to funding to save money and insist i have local CBT treatment.... like i said... in my opinion, they are Morons! what a waste of NHS time and money..... they should accept the word of the top specialists.

Akira.... "If you dont talk about your BDD then there's no point in getting a local assessment"... Correct! there is NO point, the funding will be rejected, without a doubt. And look at it like this...... would you want to talk to a butcher about your car repairs????

You may be right, but let me tell you a story about a trainee I worked with, most people 'assumed' that because she was a trainee she would be less experienced when it comes to OCD. Yet, she was fascinated by the illness and immersed herself in learning, attending conferences in her own time at her own expenses to learn more, and that person in my opinion knew more about OCD than 20-30 year psychiatrist and psychology veterans, and she worked at local level. Ok, I accept not all local therapists will be so good, but my point is, I don't think you can dismiss any offer of help until you have tried it.

Now. you may be right about the eventual outcome, but if you were funded to CADAT by the local trust, you have to assume that if they are to fund you again, they need to assess you for themselves, I don't think that is unreasonable.

At the end of the day it is up to you what you do, but my advice would be to attend the assessment, be honest and open with them, but also it is ok to explain that you feel that a BDD specialist at ADRU would be a better option, but I would not refuse any offer of local treatment if it is offered, at that point ask them if you have half a dozen sessions, if you are no better would they then refer you.

Again, just to refer back to my previous post, specialist national treatment options do exist if you are eligible.

Im not familiar with the type of help received at The Maudsley Hospital, but how would it differ from getting help at The Bethlem? Both would be conducted by similar qualified people i expect and do similar CBT focused on BDD I presume.

Hi Akira, CADAT (Maudsley) is just outpatient treatment (60-90 minutes a week), where ADRU (Bethlem) clinic is residential (Mon to Fri) with a little more therapy hours (one-to-one and group) during the week, but in theory the quality of treatment will be similar. That said, sometimes different therapists will have a different approach and that in itself can be helpful. The other advantage is that the peer support will be available at the ADRU which can be helpful too.
