Treatment dilemma

Ok, so I have a new dr, he was very understanding about the OCD, admitted that he's not a world expert but has had some dealings with it in other patients and has suggested an alternative treatment option - an addiction clinic!! He's sent some patients there before and apparently they've done quite well. The clinic is a day centre offering cbt amongst other treatments.

I was listening to him and was actually concidering it until he mentioned the crèche!! I hadn't concider ed childcare! I'm not sure how comfortable I'd be putting monkeyfrog in the crèche for a few hours, it is ofsted recommended, but I'm not sure about it. And what good is the treatment if I spend the whole time worrying what's happening in the crèche???

Also, I don't know if it's the right kind of treatment for me, along side the cbt the follow 12 steps and encourage 'spiritual' connection. Don't get me wrong, I'm a regular church goer but I'm not sure I believe in it, I go for my son as I think he should have an informed choice when he grows up. I had a fight with god and we've still not made up!

I can see the plus sides but I can also see the negatives. Hubby is quite keen for me to go but I'm not so sure. Dont know what to do

oh dear oh dear .harri. im sorry but the drs reccomedation in my opinion isnt suitable for a ocd sufferer to get cbt specifically tailored for ocd

An addiction centre , spiritual connection .. isnt an alternative .... is it ? nope.

One would have to say, that its probably ( in my opinion) a bad option.

could you pass it over to ashley to look at?

They off cbt as well, but you have to do all the other stuff too. He said its treating the OCD like an addiction! I'm not sure either way

what do you think harri / from the knowledge you have gained over the years ?... is it the correct treatment for ocd ? ask him ask the gp, is it the correct treatment for ocd as set out in the nice guidlines?

Hi Harri,

It's a bit difficult to advise, but there are a couple of points of my own opinion I'd like to make:-

1) OCD is not caused by a lack of spirituality / religion. Whilst some people might find solace in their beliefs, I would be wary of anyone suggesting it as a cure for OCD.

2) OCD is not an addiction. An addiction begins as something which is pleasurable, which later turns into a habit and a problem. OCD rituals were never pleasurable in the first place. They are not something that the sufferer carries out to achieve pleasure; rather something that is carried out to try to reduce bad feelings / thoughts.

Hmmm....I'm rather sceptical too Harri. A member of an OCD support group once told me he went to AA meetings, despite not being an alcoholic himself, because he found the 12 steps philosophy interesting and it could be applied to OCD as well as addiction. However this was a personal choice he'd made and he'd also had CBT. You need a CBT therapist who specialises in OCD not drug and alcohol addiction. I'm guessing that the advantage to this treatment centre is that it doesn't have a long waiting list in comparison to the NHS. I'd ask your GP for a referral to your local IAPT(Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) team so a trained behavioural therapist/psychologist can carry out an assessment and decide what treatment's best for you.

Why not give the options a try - you have nothing to loose and everything to gain! :original:

because it isnt going to help one bit.zee and will probably be a complete waste of time.

thats why we have nice guidlines for the treatment of ocd.

I'm still undecided, it means getting cbt, but not sure I agree with the rest, and feel really uncomfortable about putting monkeyfrog in the crèche!! I know I'll have to send him to school at some point but that's different.

My brain hurts :(

I tend to agonise over decisions very badly to a point where I make myself ill.. I have now come to the conclusion that we can never know for sure if a decision we make is right or wrong but that first gut feeling you get is usually a good indication :) And like you said, youre not comfortable with some of the elements of this treatment and if you are worried about your little one being in creche then how much are you really engage with it? xx
