Misdiagnosis?

Hi, I am a new member. I have a family member who was recently told that they have OCD. Previously they were diagnosed with a type of psychosis and I am angry that in their teens they were possibly prescribed the wrong medication and given the wrong support/guidance. They were recently told during CBT sessions that they have OCD (several types). I am angry and confused about a possible misdiagnosis; but realise what has been done has been done. I acknowledge that mental illness is a very complex area and this cannot be an unusual situation where a person is told they have one thing; when it may possibly in the future be diagnosed as something else, especially when their symptoms change. How do I move forward and feel reassured that my family member is getting the right support and care they require (and deserve)? When I know how much they have struggled with their illness. Thank you.

How long ago was the "misdiagnoses" made ? sadly ocd can be misdiagnosed if the person diagnosing is or has

a lack of knowledge in regards to ocd.

Hopefully, with the correct help now , the ocd will lessen and life will get better .

are they able to pop on forums for support and advice as well /

Thanks for your reply, this misdiagnosis was made approx 5 years ago and the OCD diagnosis was made this year. I will recommend my family member to use the forums on this site.

The person had been prescribed really strong drugs which knocked them out and made them feel worse during the dark days.

Now It is early days for the CBT, and I hope that it helps, will be patient and keep supporting my loved one.
