Jinky
October 10th - 16th is OCD Awareness Week. I am an OCD sufferer, I don't just wash my hands a bit or clean my home really well, it runs a lot deeper and can cause tremendous suffering. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder has ranked in the top ten of the most disabling illnesses of any kind, in terms of lost earnings and diminished quality of life - it really is a serious illness, and affects as many as 12 in every 1000 people (1.2% of the population) from young children to adults, regardless of gender or social or cultural background. Deep inside the brain lies a structure called the caudate nucleus. Scientists worldwide have studied this structure and believe that, in people with OCD, the caudate nucleus may be malfunctioning. Ashley
That is an incredibly brave thing to do Ooba, well done to you. Along the same theme I need some help to create a few different styles of status messages that people can use up to and during the Awareness Week. I think maybe the more hard hitting or something that makes people sit back and take a second glance is the way to go, although will require those that are brave enough t to speak out to post them. For example, someone could write ‘I have intrusive thought’s about harming my partner’ which is eye catching, then in the comment underneath add ‘I suffer with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, this week is OCD Awareness Week’. Obviously only those people comfortable with posting will do so, but we need to come up with ideas for different aspects of OCD. For example, I could write ‘I washed my hands until they are red raw’, that part is quite eye catching. Then underneath I would add the link about it being OCD Awareness Week. We could come up with standard ‘this is OCD Awareness Week’ examples, but nobody will take any notice. Therefore we need quite catching ones. Perhaps we also need to challenge stigma in a controversial way by creating status that criticise people that refer to themselves as a ‘bit OCD’? Link to comment

Guest Charlotte
That's fantastic and really brave... well done I'm building myself up to post the status messages during the week - I think that it's really important to spread awareness in any way that we can, but it's still a little scary... seeing that you have done it has given me the push that I needed, thank you! Mad4choco
Well done Ooba I admire you hunni for that, I too am on facebook and I'm not sure if I feel brave enough to put that as my status but I may build up to that for awareness week as my parents and family don't know I have OCD mind you this would be one way of telling them! Good on you though you are very brave for that, I am going to have my pic taken with the placard for awareness and post that as my profile pic for awareness week and when anyone asks I shall tell them all about OCD uk and the good work this charity does. Jinky
Just put these together as status ideas.... Did you think you might throw your child from a window today? An OCD sufferer somewhere could be avoiding their child because of this meaningless thought. Did you stay in today for fear of contracting aids from a plaster on the street? An OCD sufferer could be staying in today having an anxiety attack because of this meaningless thought. Do you wash your hands repeatedly until you think its right? An OCD sufferer could be sitting in pain right now with red raw, bleeding hands. Did you run someone over on your way to work today? An OCD sufferer could be retracing their journey right now, to check they didn’t because of a meaningless thought. Have you ever had a song stuck in your head? An OCD sufferer could be locked in complete fear and anxiety because of an awful thought stuck in their head. Will you catch a life threatening illness from that public toilet on the seafront? An OCD sufferer might have avoided a trip to the beach today because of this meaningless thought. Have you spent months of life worrying over a thought? An OCD sufferer somewhere, right now, could be in complete turmoil because of a meaningless thought. Edited September 28, 2011 by Jinky Link to comment

Lucy1234
That is really brave Ooba, I don't think I would be able to put that on my status. I need a bit more pushing to put it on my status, I want to do it but I am so worried what people might say. Link to comment

Guest worriedmum
Wow well done for being so brave! Raising awareness is key. Last night we were chilling out with our 13 yr old son who has battled with OCD, and out of the blue he just said "mum I think I have beaten OCD you know. I just feel so well and yeah I get thoughts but I deal with them and they are no big deal. OCD is no longer a big part of who I am." INDEED! He is a precious person FIRST and LAST. OCD is a crappy illness but it's not who he is or was. I am SO thankful for those times of clarity where he sees his OCD for what it is and that he sees himself as WINNING... or having WON. And maybe it's a long term war with short term battles. I don't know what it is but right now he's WELL and has been for a long while. I know some of you are in the pit of OCD right now but please hold on because you can get better. I have purchased a couple of OCD-UK bags and a few wristbands to post to my (as yet unaware!) family members in readiness for next week. If Josh is ok with it I will also post an OCD status next week. x Link to comment

Guest Whatif
Legend do you not think you will just get a load of trouble putting that status, its different putting that on facebook to here because we understand what OCD is, ignorant people may not. Both you and the OP are very brave in doing it though Edited October 3, 2011 by Whatif Link to comment
Guest legend
Nope because a lot of my friends understand my history and if we continue to keep hiding then in theory people with this type of OCD will perhaps continue to hide away Can't be in trouble for OCD and I will continue my awareness as I have done since I got better However I do see your points Link to comment
Guest Wazza
I just thought I'd bump this ahead of tomorrow. What should we put on our Facebook statuses? Link to comment

Guest Elle Belle
Yes; I worry because I haven't told most of my colleagues at work, including my bosses in one job. I haven't told all my friends either. Do you think if awareness was raised, diagnosis of OCD would go up? Because I come on here and talk to so many people that I cannot believe that only 1.2% of people have this condition! It makes me doubt I have it because I think 'what are the odds?' xx Link to comment
mightyhorse
I'm not friends with that many people from work on Facebook. I told my boss and he was great. Let me have time off for CBT. Not sure why I panicked so much. I imagine my friends would all be pretty good about it... Hey ho! Link to comment
