Guest jacquesmjonker
Hey there. I am 19y old and suffer from OCD, mainly "Pure O" OCD. I was diagnosed in November of 2013 by my psychologist. At first I was diagnosed with depression and the beginning of 2013 but as my OCD worsened I finally got the courage to talk to my psychologist about it. When I was younger I never paid much attention to the compulsions; I just thought I had weird quirks. I am on medication to help me with my depression and OCD. Link to comment

He he he - I was just the same for the longest time. I geuinley thought this thing, whatever it was was peculiar to me and I was walking around like that for over 2 decades. Sad really. So are you receiving any help for this yet Jacques? Have you read any books? Link to comment
legalseagull
Yep same here. I didn't know there was help out there. What's the general attitude to OCD like in South Africa? Do you have to pay for treatment? Link to comment
Guest jacquesmjonker
Yes I am in therapy and on anti anxiety meds and anti depressants. OCD isn't as well known as in other countries. For example: here there are less specialised treatment centres and not so many therapists that specialise in OCD. Link to comment

One thing I've learned from this forum is there is a tremendous variation in the quality of psychologists. BEfore that I would have assumed one was pretty much as good as another. Seems often people have to try more than one psychologist. Have they got you doing any CBT/exposure type tasks? Link to comment
Guest jacquesmjonker
Yeah but since my ocd is Pure O, ERP is difficult but I've been receiving cognitive behavioural therapy Link to comment

I have the same thing. I'm not at that stage yet, but I read somewhere that it's about exposing yourself to the doutbs and bad thoughts without responding how you normally would. Sounds tough. It takes faith in to the process behind it I think. I hope we can summon enough of that. Link to comment
