What would happen if I started a medication on a higher dose?

Recommended Posts

Say I started paroxetine on 30mg instead of 20mg...what's the point of tapering up a medication? What could possibly happen if your doctor just started you on a higher dose instead of tapering up gradually?

Your body would not have time to adjust. The side effects would be much worse and you could even have a reaction from putting that much foreign drugs into your body. You have to gradually increase the dose of meds so that your body gets used to it.

Please review our pinned topic. We can not possibly say what could happen, and I don't think a Dr could either but you do need to discuss this with a Dr, it is outside the remit of the forum.

Hi Ryukil

Your medication has been prescribed by your Doctor at a specific dosage for a reason. Can I remind you (and any other user) that medication should only ever be used as prescribed, at the dose at which it has been prescribed.

Neither the charity, yourself or any of our members are qualified to make any recommendations to deviate from this....nor is it sensible or advisable to do so, hence the thread was closed.

Please refer back to the prescribing professional for guidance or to discuss this with them before considering any action :)
