Going out and not drinking

Recommended Posts

So I've been invited out from Uni people and I'm planning on going although I do feel very nervous. I get really bad ibs symptoms when nervous so it's annoying/embarrassing makes we want to just stay in. I feel safe in the house but I know I need to try make the effort. I don't drink due to the fact I have a fear of vomitting/it irritates my stomach further and I don't like the dizzy drunk feeling so I'm planning on taking the car. But when people find out your not drinking they look at u like u have 2 heads and question it someone once said to me 'why do u even leave the house' as u can imagine this makes me even more nervous these questions! I know I should go but I feel nervous does anyone else get like this and does anyone have good advice how to deal with it? Thanks x

I must admit, most of the people I go out with know of my OCD, so if I say I'm not drinking or not drinking much, they tend to be pretty good with me.

Could you tell them? or maybe use an excuse, such as you have an early morning, or your on medication? Or just tell them you don't like drinking?

Whatever happens, I hope you get to relax & have a good time :original:

I don't drink alcohol for Ocd related reasons (I know it's a bit of a compulsion, but I don't really like alcohol anyway), and I completely understand how you feel as I am often the odd one out for not drinking, however, I have decided that it's up to me to decide not to drink and it doesn't matter what others think. I don't need to have a drink to have a good time, and it's cheaper!!!!!

Thankyou for your response and advice! I suppose I'll have the car so I can use that excuse. The people I'm close to know about my anxiety and the way it affects my stomach hence me not drinking but I don't like telling everyone as i sometimes feel embarrassed. Thankyou I've nearly pulled out a few times but will try my best to go for a while at least

I like the way u view it tho your right it's up to us if we don't want to drink! Thanks for the reply :)

Well done Mrs B.

You stood up to your fears and you can build ion that now.

I never drank much since getting married except with work mates on a team lunch - and when I wanted to I would simply switch to orange juice and coke.

I am now trying meds again so in any case would have to drink very little but that's no problem to me anyway. At home my wife and I have half bottles of wine in stock for an occasional drink with dinner.

I also don't drink, never have done.

Now in my second year at uni so I totally understand the social pressure to drink, and it is a totally foreign concept to some people that you don't drink.

My choice is mainly social anxiety based as the thought of not being in complete control of myself in any situation terrifies me.

Stay strong and stick to your morals.
