Professor Paul Salkovskis

In December OCD-UK broke the news that a unique new NHS specialist treatment centre for OCD and Anxiety is to be launched through a partnership between the University of Bath and Avon & Wiltshire Mental Health Trust (AWP) led my OCD-UK patron, Professor Paul Salkovskis.

Since we broke the news, official details have now been confirmed about referral access to the new clinic.

Based in South Bristol the Centre for Specialist Psychological Treatments of Anxiety and Related Problems aims to meet a gap in highly specialist evidence-based treatment for a range of psychological problems, in particular focusing on those patients that suffer with OCD.

The new centre will provide treatment for both Avon and Wiltshire local residents, but it will also offer a national treatment service for residents in other parts of the UK. The new service will be offering intensive treatments over a period of a few days to two weeks, allowing particularly rapid resolution of such problems.

OCD-UK welcome this new intensive treatment which ensures that people with OCD are given further options, especially helpful for those people that are in work and find it difficult to get regular time off work every week for several month to attend treatment sessions. This now offers sufferers the choice to book time off work, as holiday if necessary, to attend treatment over a short 1-2 week period.

Professor Paul Salkovskis (pictured), said: “Although effective treatment has been possible for some time, it has not been available at the level of expertise required by the most seriously affected. These are unnecessary illnesses which the clinic will be able to deal with, improving quality of life for sufferers.â€

Our chair, Kylie Cloke, told the Bath Chronicle “We are absolutely delighted to learn that the University of Bath and Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust have recognised the importance and need for a specialist treatment services for anxiety problems including Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.â€

Referral Information:
Individuals with OCD can not self-refer to the clinic, referral must come from the GP or other Mental Health worker, the clinic will only accept referrals from within the NHS and does not provide private referral options. The referral process does depend where in the UK that you live. For a specialist clinic of this type, referral usually has to be approved by the local NHS. Usually this can be arranged by your GP or Mental Health worker (Psychiatrist or Psychologist) if they consider it to be appropriate.

Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Trust catchment area referrals
GP's in the catchment area of Avon and Wiltshire Partnership Mental Health Trust (AWP)
should ensure the appropriateness of referrals by checking with the main AWP Psychological Treatment Service (PTS).

Referral should then be made to Professor Salkovskis at clinical-psychology-clinic@bath.ac.uk with a copy marked for the attention of Dr Claire Williamson at AWP at ReferralsBANESPTS@awp.nhs.uk.

AWP will direct the referral either to the clinic or to another part of the AWP psychological treatment services.

Outside of the Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Trust catchment area - residents of other parts of England, Wales and Scotland.
Funding for these referrals needs to be agreed by the originating NHS Trust or Health Board; most Trusts have a commissioning panel which makes such decisions. OCD-UK can assist anyone who has problems getting a referral approved. Once a referral is received from the GP or psychologist/psychiatrist to clinical-psychology-clinic@bath.ac.uk it can be held until NHS Trust funding is approved.

Referrals can also be made using the postal addresses below:

Hi Goldie,

I may just have replied to you via email if you are the lady that emailed in, but if not, and for others that may want to ask about Swindon I will copy the reply here.

I have checked with the clinic director, and at present, they don't believe a clinic will open in Swindon for some time, I believe the problem is the location of a suitable building within the Avon and Wiltshire services in Swindon. However, you should still be eligible for treatment if you are under Avon and Wiltshire's trust area, but would need to attend sessions in Bristol. If any exposure work is needed at home, then the therapists will travel to Swindon for the odd session there.

Full referral details can be found on our website here: http://www.ocduk.org/bristol-national-ocd-centre

I am meeting with AWP tomorrow to find out their plans for the new centre, and what it means for the people of Bristol and the Bath region. Does anybody have any questions they would like me to put to AWP about the new centre, or OCD treatment in general?
