rights during a hospital stay

As a sufferer of OCD do I have a right to a private room if I am admitted to hospital for an unrelated issue?

My obsession is being sick, so the idea of a hospital stay in a room full of ill people with germs everywhere and superbugs being a common occurence is absolutely terrifying to me, and although my OCD is currently manageable I don't think I'd ever be able to cope in this situation, the panic would be uncontrollable.

I know I could pay to go private but I don't think i'll be able to afford that.

Any responses much appreciated.

Hi Charlotte,

Sadly, you've don't have the right to a private room as an NHS patient. If you explain your OCD fears to the nurse in charge she may try to place you in a side ward (private room) if one is available, but there is no obligation on them to do so and you certainly don't have any 'rights'. If another patient needs the room for medical issues (such as being kept in isolation because they have an infection, or someone is dying and needs a quiet place), they would be given precedence over your request and you could be moved out of the side room onto the main ward if that happens.

I'm afraid the only way to guarantee a private room would be to go private.
