OCD of BDD or both or neither

My son has a diagnosis of OCD, but I wanted to ask about one particular aspect of it and whether that is OCD or BDD.

My son thinks that his eyes/eyelashes are like a girls. He specifically thinks his eyelashes are too long and that makes him look like a girl. He has trimmed them with nail clippers a number of times to make them short.

He also tries to trim his eyebrows, but less often.

But he has also said that he has had to trim them because they had germs on them.

So what do you think?

Hi Sally

Thats an dificult one. I guess you need to be certain of the reason he is trimming them. He may tell you one thing, but that may not be entirely the the truth. Im not implying that your son is a liar, but BDD is a very shameful condition, and i know first-habnd that ANY other reason is better than telling the real irrational truth. It sounds like it could be either, or both. OCD & BDD very often go hand-in-hand.

Is he currently receiving treatment for OCD? if so, im sure any therepist worth their salt will be able to deal with this, whatever his reasons.

Teh first battle is to get an official diagnosis, which you have. Now he is in the system and can get treatment.

He isn't receiving therapy yet. It's been a struggle to get any NHS department to offer it because he is also on the autistic spectrum and they seem to think that gives them a get out clause for not offering CBT.

I'll speak to them when we get an appointment. I don't want another diagnosis, my son has got a long list of those already. I just want some input/advice for school and home.

Hi Sal how are you doing? I'm very sorry also to hear about your son.It may be OCD∨ BDD i think a bit tough to say from here.I understand your distress about not wanting another diagnosis&very important of course if something can be done about this asap. And it's wonderful to see also you're doing everything possible to get this addressed.I'd say keep persisting with it to get him to see someone, great of course if he doesn't have BDD I say if for e.g he does then you maybe can think as much as you didn't want this at least you have a diagnosis and something can be done about that now :original: .

Hi Sally. If he keeps looking in the mirror at them try to get him to only look about once or twice a day in the mirror to do his hair or whatever before he goes out but looking a lot to get reassurance that they are alright is definitely wrong and tends to make it worse
