NHS - New right to choose MH provider

Recommended Posts

This is still something that is relatively new, and in practice may not always benefit people with OCD. But from 1st April 2014, patients have the legal right to choice in mental health treatment, however there are stipulations to that ruling, which state it is only to allow a patient to choice for their first outpatient appointment, both:

- any clinically appropriate provider of mental health services that has a contract with any NHS commissioner; and

- which team within that organisation provides the patients care and treatment.

So in layman's terms, if I am reading this correctly it means someone new to treatment for OCD can choose to have IAPT therapy from provider B rather than their local IAPT provider. I am seeking clarification on that. This may not sound too much, but where we identify good and bad IAPT services, it does allow patients in those bad areas to choose the good area for treatment. Of course, they would have to then pay for their own travel I assume.

Has anyone put this new legislation into practice for mental health treatment yet?

Hi Ashley,

I did know about this but my GP has told me I will still have trouble getting funding from the CCG. I did try to get funding in 2013 from Feb. and in Nov. I gave it up as they just messed me about and it made me so ill. I was accepted for treatment at a specialist centre, subject to funding. They just don't want to pay, but if you take all the cost of my ' treatment ' over all the years and is continuing it is not cost effective.
