Going to see my GP about my OCD, what happens?

Recommended Posts

I have finally after living 27 year's with OCD going to go and see my GP and get referred to see someone about obliterating this devil. I originally went to see my GP over a year ago, received a letter a couple weeks later with a number to phone, but never followed through. I am going back. Where will I be referred to? A psychologist? An OCD specialist? What is the treatment like? Is it just exposure therapy? CBT?

Well done for taking this step.

I don't know what the chain of events will be. When I first went to my GP, he diagnosed OCD and prescribed meds for me to start on. He also referred me to the local psychiatric team but made arrangements for me to see a counsellor in the meantime.

You are taking the first step - hopefully this will be the start of your recovery......

Please let us know how you get on.

Good luck

You won't look back yoz, I also kept putting off seeking more help.......if you check out this info it covers the process and what's involved, but essentially, yep the CBT will involve ERP but should also cover the cognitive elements too.

I hope you get on OK :original:

Hello All

I first went to see my GP in 2000 - a long time in health care, and under a different NHS, with a different government and different policies. And of course, treatments were that much less established then. I had already worked out from the website of the charity then called Obsessive Action that I was an OCD sufferer. My GP is a kind man and I am glad to still be with him today. He referred me to a psychiatrist, but it was in a private capacity. This took me on the road to staying in the Priory for a while, and receiving adequate but not spectacular CBT.

In 2009, with my most recent breakdown, I was able to see my GP and he this time referred me directly to NHS mental health services. I had to wait about six weeks to see a psychiatrist, but it was definitely worth it. I have not looked back!

I first went to a GP re OCD about 30 years ago and many times since.
The responses have varied:referral to Community Psychiatric Nurse (who thern refers you to a psychologist who may or not take you on),direct referral to psychologist with whom you complete a course of talking treatment, prescribing of medicine (Seroxat,Prozac,Clomipramine),referral to IAPT.

Me personally, the only thing that works is sticking to regular medication (which ever one you get on with best),and the right talking treatment....but ultimately,it's the medication (Clomipramine 10mg) that is fundamentally breaking OCD's grip on me.
