Inpatient Treatment Experiences?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just wondering if anybody here has had any experiences of being an inpatient at one of the 'specialist' hospitals like Springfield, Bethlem, Priory or the one in Bristol?

I would really appreciate some feedback (good or not so good)

Thanks

Hello,

Yes I went to Bethlem's ADRU for 3 months from October 2013 to January this year, and also visited and was offered a place at Springfield last summer. If you PM me I can give you more details :)

Hi PoppyRose,

There are two main in-patient treatment centres in England:

1. The Anxiety Disorders Residential Unit (ADRU) at Bethlem Royal Hospital in Beckenham (close to Kent and greater London).

2. The Seacole Ward at Springfield University Hospital in Tooting, London.

If you search for 'Anxiety disorders residential unit' on Google you can find a booklet in PDF form as the second link. If you Google 'OCD-BDD national referrers guide' you'll find a leaflet about Springfield university hospital.

There are criteria that you normally have to need to meet to get in-patient treatment with national funding (so without having to get your local authority to pay for treatment), which are that you've had/have:

1. Treatment with at least two SRIs including clomipramine and/or an SSRI.
Each trial should be for a minimum of 2 weeks and at optimal British National Formulary doses.
2. Two trials of cognitive and behavioural psychotherapy (CBT). A trial of therapy is defined as at least 10 hours of therapist time. One treatment trial should have taken place in the patients home environment or where the symptoms are maximal.
3. A high Y-BOCs (a measure that assesses OCD severity) score - usually this has to be above 30 out of 40.
They make some exceptions, for example if:
1. You've refused to take medication due to OCD beliefs
2. You've not fulfilled the criteria for previous CBT treatment due to mental or physical illness.
If you don't meet these criteria (and none of the exemptions apply) then you would have to get your local CMHT to secure local funding.

Anxiety disorders residential unit (ADRU)

The ADRU as the name suggests is a residential unit so the therapists are there from 9am until 5pm each day and the patients/residents stay each night of the week but most go home for the weekends. There are no nurses and you are expected to be able to self-care (e.g. use toilets, eat), although they can help people with problems with these issues during the day (e.g. if you have contamination issues and struggle to use toilets/prepare food).

At the ADRU you can expect to have 2-5 sessions of CBT per week with one CBT therapist. There are also Occupational therapy sessions and classes (e.g. cooking, art, meditation, play-reading) alongside other hospital activities such as 'Group meetings' and 'Assertiveness' classes.

Springfield

Springfield hospital provides 24 hour nursing and is able to deal with profoundly severe OCD (including people who have problems with bathing, using toilets, eating etc).

There is a focus on medical treatment with anti-depressants and low doses of anti-psychotic medication.

Patients usually have 1 session per week with a CBT therapist and help from nurses to carry out CBT tasks throughout the rest of the week.

I'm not sure what Occupational therapy is like at Springfield- I think they offer art classes but I'm not sure what else is on offer.

Please feel to PM me if you'd like to know more about the ADRU.

:)
