Guest chestermillbank
hi all. just wondering what ERP is, is it like cbt? Link to comment
Guest frazzle
Hi Chester ERP stands for Exposure and Respose Prevention I think it is basically being exposed to your particular obsessions such as something you may consider 'dirty' and then being prevented from responding such as cleaning, in order to habituate you to your obsessions and get used to not doing compulsions, I think it is a part of CBT treatment coming under the Behaviour element, I'm sure others will be able to give more in depth explanations but this is what I understand it to be. Hope that helps a little. Link to comment
Guest panix2007
I think frazzle has it right. You expose yourself to obsessive fears and then refuse to carry out mental and physical compulsions. After a time, your anxiety level will drop and you will find that what seemed so horrible isn't actually that bad after all. Link to comment

catherine
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) Link to comment
Guest panix2007
According to research, I believe that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is the best way to treat OCD. The behavioral component includes ERP, and I think (but am not completely certain) that the cognitive part consists of talk therapy where you start to analyze your fears and see things more rationally. Guest Balloon
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) Cognitive means mental processes like thinking. The word "cognitive" refers to anything that goes on in your mind including dreams, memories, images, thoughts, and attention. Behaviour refers to everything that you do. This includes what you say, how you try to solve problems, how you act, and avoidance. Behaviour refers to both action and inaction. Therapy is a word used to describe a systematic approach to combating a problem, illness, or irregular condition. Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) In CBT, facing your fears and resisting the urge to carry out compulsions is called Exposure and Response Prevention. Exposure: deliberately facing up to the places, people, situations, substances, objects, thoughts, doubts, impulses, and images that trigger off your feelings of anxiety and discomfort. Response Prevention: reducing and stopping the rituals and any other safety precautions that you adopt. I have taken this from one of my favourite books: Willson R and Branch R (2006). Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Dummies. John Wiley and Sons, England. Don't forget, if you order a copy of this or any other book, remember to do it either through the link at the top of the screen or through the OCD-UK bookshop - so that OCD-UK also benefits from your purchase . Hope that helps, Balloon xxx Link to comment
