Currently going through my yearly 2 week bout of Depression, thankfully the works keeping me afloat.

Does anyone else get it when they just want to switch off from the world and not talk to family and friends?

Hey Ashxx :)

Sorry you're feeling bad  Hope things get better soonxxx

I get like that sometimes, When i'm at work i'll think oh i wish i could just stay over here all day and talk to myself :blushing: I am somebody who likes company but i know what you mean by just wanting to shut things out at times :)

I usually find that when i do chat to people it does help, so i try to make myself whenever I get these feelingsx

Take Care ash, hope you feel better soonx

P.s Have you heard of those light box thingys? I don't know much about them but i've heard that they can be very helpful for SADxx

Hi Ash,

I hope you feel better really soon. I don't suffer from SAD, but I do suffer from depression all year round so I know how awful it can be. Just hang in there and hopefully it will pass quickly. You have your friends on here to help you through if you need us :blushing:

I have suffered from depression for a number of years now. When I'm feeling really low I withdraw into myself and don't feel able to talk to anyone, not even my closest friend.

However, it really does help to spend time with other people if at all possible. When depressed we spend far too much time with our own thoughts and too much rumination just reinforces the cycle of depression. The Depression Learning Path is a very good site for explaining this and ways to break the cycle.

I find that when I am able to put into practise the methods to prevent excessive rumination I do feel a little better and I am still working at getting over this depression.

I hope you are feeling a little better. As you said keeping busy does help even though we can lack the motivation to actually do anything.

Hi folks,

The links below provide further info on lightboxes as a treatment for SAD. The products are kind of steep for a private purchase but I gather they can be prescribed under certain circumstances ("Brightspark" and "New Desk Lamp" are good size for personal use but are £115 and £145 respectively!) I've thought several years running about getting one as I always hit a low at this time of year, which comes and goes until the clocks go forward!

I reckon if you spend a lot of time based at the PC, it's probably worth it. I certainly believe in the claimed benefits; I know how much better I feel if I get out for a sunny day's walking at this time of year (fat chance at the moment - it didn't even get light here today, never mind sunny!!)

Chin up guys.

Sorry, I've only just come upon this post - because I've been feeling the same ie wanting to switch off from the world. In fact I've spent a lot of the past week in bed - the only place I could cope.

So I'm really sorry to hear you feel the same and hope you feel a lot cheerier soon :xmas_redface: .

Take care

bring on the sunshine

SAD is a real bummer, my uncle suffers, charming in the summer (sometimes, he is in his 80's) aviod him if you can in the winter,

He's in his 80's and when he was a young man depression and SAD were unheard of everyone just though he was misery who didn't like Christmas.

Aren't we living in enlightened times :xmas_redface:

Hi Ashie :D

I've suffered from SAD for years but it lasts a lot longer than 2 weeks. It starts late September and tends to go around 1st March, it's as though someone throws a switch.

I have a light box and a light alarm clock. Once I'm awake I make a cup of tea and have the light on for an hour or so while I read or watch TV. It also helps to get outside for about an hour. Even in weak winter sunshine it is known to help to be outdoors around midday.

It also helps, if the sun is out, stand at the window and look towards the sun BUT THROUGH CLOSED EYELIDS - NEVER LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN

I don't think Christmas or New Year help, there's so much hype, hard work, anti-climax etc. But never mind, Christmas is past, the days will get longer and it'll soon be spring.

Hope you're feeling sunnier soon Ash...from one SAD so-and-so to another

Hello Ashie

Sorry to hear that you are suffering with SAD.

I have had the same thing for 25 years or so; sometimes I think that I am going to get through a winter without it and then it strikes completely without warning. I too feel that it's sometimes difficult to make the effort to socialise but much worse than that is the difficulty motivating myself to do any serious work. Writing letters and E-mails is also very difficult.

I think that a light box would be a good investment though I have to admit that I still haven't bought one. I had an interesting experience at work a few years ago when I was suffering badly from SAD and I used a different sort of light box at work because I needed to trace some drawings and needed a backlight to do this. After spending a day or two with this device (and without thinking that it could help me) my depression lifted dramatically! :D

Otherwise try going for walks at lunchtime when the sun is strongest.

Hope that you feel better soon,

Ian

Thanks Ian and everyone.

I have pretty much snapped out of it now, the ch5 documentary last week got me working again which helped and I think a couple of negative things said abotu me recently have brought me out fighting so think I have gone through it for now :D

Yep - and the only way I've found to deal with it is to deliberately speak to people as much as possible.

It seems like such an effort and I'd much rather unplug the phone and hide in my duvet - but whenever I've done that ( :( ) it's taken me ages to snap out of it.

Hope you're over the worst and feeling sunnier :(
