Ok...whos ready to get annoyed...I listen to a staion on the radio called talk sport and one day they were talking about David Beckham (the footballer)..apparently he has ocd..one of the panel who is normally controversial said there is no such thing as ocd and that 'these people should get a grip and pull themselves together'...what do you think?...for his defence, after receiving quite a few calls he seemed to have changed his view but concluded the show by saying although there probably is something called ocd, he had never heard of it.........

Yup, I hate this.

I read an article recently which made fun of a politician focusing on his extreme cleaning habits and, to me, obvious OCD compulsions.

I wrote a mad letter to the journalist. But he never replied.

(Sorry, the article is in my non-English language, but I'd loved you to read it.)

.........parry is an idiot whose used to getting himself in trouble. I remember the time when tony adams was after decking him cos he said a drunk couldnt manage a football team  . I think he just says things at times to get a response, but it is frustrating and annoying that so many of the general public feel we should just pull ourselves together and stop being so stupid. But to be fair, its moronic press seeking celebs 'with OCD' like Beckham which is were this negative attitude comes from. Im sorry, but arranging coke cans in order cannot be classed as what we are all going through, it should be classed as a publicity stunt which is clearly what it is. I have OCD and dont want to tell my friends, never mind every newspaper in the english speaking world. rant over. :crybaby:

Sorry Majestic, I disagree slightly. In this case it is coke cans, but many people spend hours trying to arrange 'objects' in a certain symmetry or order which is a very real brand of OCD. I read he also has some issue with his running shoes, although I am not sure what it was.

I don't know if Becks has OCD or not but he is such a big star that I would not hesitate to use him to raise publicity for the condition if I could get him to agree.

I couldn't say whether Beckham has ocd or not, but I have been hearing his name connected to it for a year or two now-certainly a long time before it became 'trendy' to have it.

sorry ashie, i am certainly not saying that symmetry ocd is not a big deal - it could have been any ocd flavour. My point is that people like beckham seem to be using ocd for their own personal gain and publicity and jumping on the band wagon. Im sure most people will check if they've locked a door once or twice, but this certainly is not the same (or its a hell of a lot milder) as feeling incredibly anxious and having to repeatedly check the door again and again. If I am wrong, and he is a sufferer, then i apologise and would agree that to get him involved would be fantastic. What I am against is the 'trendyness' of having it. Again, apologies if he does genuinely have it. I know Gazza has it in a bad way, which is definitely not a publicity stunt.

This may sound weird but I worry about the eefects of ocd becoming in the public eye. Yes it would be great to raise awareness and not feel ashamed to have it like I do, and it would help people understand it which would probably help their reactions, people like the talksport guy react like that becaus ehtey can't comprehend what ocd is and what it's like to suffer.

But, raising awareness has this bad effect on people. Like being gay, suddenly more and more people are gay, sometimes becasue it is more trendy than being straight. This happens with problems and I don't want to see it happen to ocd, if it does then people are going to start claiming they have ocd to follow in the footsteps of Beckham or whoever and be like their friends because it's trendy, meanwhile the real sufferers will still feel like they're going mad and be ashamed of telling anyone and suffer in silence, while the trendies get attention for something they don't suffer from. I'm a teenager, I'm not a fan of trendies, and I am a non-conformist but that isn't my reason behind this opinion. I know how suddenly 3/4 of my year seem to be gay, whilst when my sisters year group was my age, 2/3 people were openly gay-the same time when being gay was something you hid, now tons are openly gay because so many celebs are. Maybe thats not a bad thing but the true gays are still scared, and won't the true ocd suffers still feel like they're crazy and suffer in silence. Especially if revealing their illness is seen as an attempt to be popular.

Awareness of ocd isn't as great as you think, awareness of AIDs hasn't helped stop it.

How much money do you think AIDS charities now get for research? Millions!

If we can raise awareness and we will only do that by getting it in the public spotlight then we will have a better chance of getting money. We might not find a cure but with that money and with the public awareness we can use it to force the NHS to invest more into specialist centres for OCD. I want to see Maudsley clinics like the one Professor Salkovskis runs across the UK, if we achieve that then we will reduce waiting times from 18 months to maybe 6 months, which is priceless.

According to the ocfoundation, more money is raised for AIDS research in a day, than OCD gets in a whole year.

Yep I can believe it. Talking of the OC Foundation, they have given a researcher $30,000 to research how dietary supplement can help treat symptoms of OCD.

A very worthy research project that we would love to give money towards, but simply cant afford it. It's the type of thing that other charities should haven given money to years ago, which is why it is vital that OCD-UK raises awareness to help us bring money in.

Raising awareness of ocd won't stop people feeling embarrassed of it, what use is clinics if people are too scared to use them. Tho I would personally love to be able to walk down the street and go into a specialist clinic for a chat on my problems. Altho AIDs know has more money donated to it, it doesn't help it stop spreading, it may contribute to a vaccine or cure but at the end of the day new forms of HIV are occuring resisting all the medicine discovered with use of the donated money.

awareness of AIDs hasn't helped stop it.

My point wasn't about money or research but about how raising awareness of AIDs hasn't stopped the cause of the problem, unprotected sex. So if we raise the awareness of ocd (which i'm all for, I don't wan to be seen as a freak when I'm not becasue I have an anxiety problem) will it really stop peoples reactions and name-callings and will it stop the suffering. I can only hope.

Want to raise awareness, get it mentioned on the news about how its becoming so widespread now and one of the worse mental illnesses, BBC news gets six million viewers, thats six million more people educated. We don't need famous people to raise awareness, we just need people to take notice.

In an ideal world I would agree, but lets be honest would BBC news listen to you or me, No, would they listen to becks for example, Yes? Thats why we need celebs help. Lets use them.

Hi :crybaby:

20 years ago I really didn't know what was wrong with me but I knew something was.

If there had been more in the media, more informed doctors and more general awareness of OCD then perhaps:

1) I would have known what was wrong

2) I would not have believed I was going mad

3) My husband might have had more information and help me

4) My doctor (who himself reads newspapers/watches TV/listens to a radio) might not have told me to 'pull myself together' and identified my problem.

What a waste of 20  years!!!

Then I would have had a CHOICE at least whether or not to go for treatment.

20+ years of suffering and the 'ripple effect' to my family COULD possibly been avoided??

You will always get the insenitive, not wanting to know, and me thinks he protests too much people and to be sure they refuse to listen and learn and you have to exclude them from all situations in your life ..you have to live with it but I would like the choice of living without my OCD !!

So, I am sorry if I offend anyone when I say awareness is GOOD and if using a

'famous' face helps....then use it!!!

OOOooo!! that feels better!!

Anger subsided now!! :lol2:

Love to all Beth J xx
