Hi im 24, and long time sufferer of OCD. :(

Its was at its most extreme during my mid to late teens, but still it is the vein of my life stopping me from freely doing things I enjoy without constant interruption from compulsions. Its so frustating it gets in the way of my studying, socialising, family life, playing sport....I literally feel like a prisoner trapped by OCD, torture!!

I find its almost impossible to control. My brain has probably gone through every compulsion possible, a lot of different phrases and words, habits, rituals, actions, etc. The worst compulsion I have to deal with is dates, where I have to repeat in my head continuously the year from where a bad event happened to the present date, if I dont get the whole thing right then I would have to go over again until I did. Thats just one example.

Now I understand what it is and why it happens it makes it easier to deal with, I know that its not completely my fault and I am no longer embarrased. I think the most frustrating thing for me is that I end ignoring, not listening, giving full attention or avoiding poeple because I have to satisfy myself with my compulsions. And of course this is all connected to fears from social situations, paranoia and other things that pop into my head that quite distressing. :)

Ive had enough of going alone now and had my first session with a pyschologist and hopefully once fully diagnosed will go onto get CBT. I need to sort it out and start building my life!

After reading some of the other messages it has made feel better there other people who are experiencing the same things as me, and you are admitting your problem and being open and positive!

I wish luck to other OCD sufferers, go forth and get cured, Im right behind you!!

Hi Stuart

Well done for going and getting the help you need.

I have had CBT and I have to say along with medication it has helped me alot. Even though I still have a few bad times - life is far more enjoyable now I understand whats going on in my brain!!

Good luck :)

Hi there Stuart and a big welcome to the boards.

I'm glad to hear you've started treatment with a pyschologist, I hope it works well for you

You'll find a lot of support here on the bulletin board and plenty of information on the home page.

Look forward to reading your posts and watching your progress :)

I think this is the best thing about the board - everyone is here, not only for themselves but also to listen and support others - and I think helping others really helps ourselves.

Take care
