Guest Stevie
Listed below are a number of examples of positive self -statements some of which you may find useful when preparing for and confronting an anxiety-provoking situation. When you have read these, see if you can think of any others, which may be of benefit to you. 1. I will be all right. I know how to control my anxiety. 2. Nothing dreadful is going to happen. 3. This is another opportunity to practice my coping skills. 4. The more often I do it the easier it will be. 5. I have done it before, I can do it again. 6. This is another opportunity for me to resolve my anxieties/difficulties. 7. I am looking forward to the challenge. 8. Anxiety is a normal response which can be controlled. 9. If I think positively I can succeed. 10. I will not come to any physical harm. 11. I will feel a sense of achievement when I have done this. 12. If I plan my day's activities I shall feel more confident. 13. If I plan what I am going to say I shall feel more confident. 14. It will help if I concentrate on slowing down my breathing. 15. I am going to look at the positive things I do. 16. This tenseness is telling me to use my coping skills. 17. I will take a few deep breaths, slowly. 18. There is no need to doubt myself. I have done it before. 19. Don't worry. Worry won't help me. 20. It is better to think about what I can do about this situation rather than just get anxious. Reproduced verbatim from a Priory CBT handout - Hope you fnd something on there that helps. Take care all...xxx Link to comment
Ashley
Kinda along the same lines. 21. It's not me, it's just my OCD. Link to comment
Guest sylvia
Hi and I think your statements are really great anxiety and ocd are linked to one and other. I have a program about anxiety written by Lucinda Basssett and she says that postive self talk is the key to recovery for anxiety, depression and lots of other mental illnesses. If you are interested in hearing or even speaking to others about anxiety, or here is a great web sight it's www.stresscenter.com go to community and then go to the forum there are some great people and there as well as on here. Good luck sweety!!! Link to comment

taurean
Yes positive affirmations are fine so long as not used to neutralise a trigger (which would be an unhelpful compulsion) or as a repetitive mental chant, which might be similar to a compulsive response. A good one to use is : "oh that's just my silly obsession" This is factual and commanding - it puts down the OCD intrusion, taking power out of it, and reclaims the mental "high ground" where we, and not the OCD, are in control. I got it from my, clinical psychologist, OCD therapist - so it has excellent provenance Link to comment
