Hi all,

Just seen an Ikea ad on TV. It shows a man looking through a magazine. He's meant to be a designer and when he sees the cheap prices of Ikea furniture in the magazine he goes beserk. He frantically starts washing his hands with a bar of soap in quite an agitated manner. As he does this he says the words 'unclean, unclean' - or something along those lines.

Would like to know what people think of this ad. My initial reaction was that it wasn't very nice - struck a cord. I know it wasn't really meant to be about OCD and wasn't meant to be having a go at sufferers. It was just the way he was depicted and the significance it held etc.

Would love some feedback :crybaby:

The media is generally full of itself. Several years ago, Saturday Night Live had a parody commercial I found highly offensive. It was about some car designed specifically for "crazy" people and it came with a faucet in the back so you could wash your hands compulsively. The also had a skit once about Alice's Tea Party and the Mad Hatter was nothing but a bundle of stereotypes who washed his hands 100 times a day because they "smelled like his mother." I think it is highly insensitive and exploitative. The Simpsons had their little fun with the horrible way in which Howard Hughes spent the last days of his life (Mr. Burns when he owned a casino) and once Homer had something happen that sent him to scrub himself and repeat "unclean." It's all meant to be funny, but I can have no respect for any person or organization that thinks the suffering of other human beings is grounds for a joke.

I remember this episode and without wishing to upset anyone I can't say that I was offended by it. I didn't feel it was done with any malice.

The car ad, however, does sound offensive. And ignorant. And not amusing :)

Hi everyone

I suppose these things could be seen as offensive. But to be honest I try to laugh along with everyone else! It helps to see the funny side of things! I wash my hands a lot and my boyfriend told my best pal that when I walk past the fish tank I wash my hands in it!!!!! Totally untrue of course!!!!!! I won't hurt my fishes!!!! But to be honest we all had a good laugh at the joke. I try to laugh at my silly little ways, I find it theraputic!!!!!! :)

Lady Macbeth was potrayed as a complusive washer after the murders so maybe we could complain about this because not all complusive handwashing is due to gult from murdering to further your husbands career...sorry

Try laughing along, we laugh at the ridiculous.
