Any advice please?

Recommended Posts

Hi Hope everyone's o.k :) .

I was wondering if anyone could offer me some advice please? :) .

I'm going back to the doctors next week :omg: , I'm going to ask for a refferal to a cbt therapist. Last time I went he prescibed medication and didn't menton cbt.

I couldn't last on the meds so I didn't take them. I'm just a bit worried about what i'll say. Do you think I should say, I tried the medication and it didn't work for me?

Should I tell the truth and tell him I only took one :wallbash:?, Or should I just say I want to try cbt?. I'm just a bit worried that he'll give me a different med and say try that instead. I get v.nervous and I wouldn't be able to stand up for myself if he said try this first etc. I don't mind trying a different med if it helps, I just really want to get on a waiting list and hopefully start getting things sorted.

Hope that makes sense??, Probally a silly post :( - I'm just really worried.

Thankyou

Love Bluexx :)

Hi Blue :wallbash:

You don't have to take medication if you don't want to, that's your decision.

Just open the conversation with 'I've come back to see you because I've been thinking and would like a referal to a CBT therapist, I think it would help me'

If he says 'What about the tablets?'

Say, 'I wasn't happy with the medication, which is why I'd like to see a CBT therapist, perhaps we could talk about medication but I still think a referral would be beneficial'

You don't need to be rude or nervous, our doctors are there to help us and you have a right to ask. That's probably why it would help if you build the request into your opening sentence, that way you've made your point before you have a chance to get nervous.

Accept his advice and listen to it but keep mentioning that 'as well' as his suggestions you feel you'd benefit from a referal.

This is one area where it helps to practice what you're going to say, so that you don't bumble and bottle it. He will ask 'What can I do for you'? Be ready with your question then at the outset.

Good Luck :)

Hi Caramoole :) .

Thankyou so much for your advice, It's really helped :) .

I like the idea of just coming out with it straight away, Hopefully like you say it will be easier if I get that out before I bottle it. I'll have a good think about what i'll say, My answers etc, and hopefully stop worrying about it now :).

Hopefully it'll go o.k,

Thanks again, Hope you're o.k

Love Bluexx :(

Off to practice for a week :wallbash: !!.

Hi blue,

Good luck with your trip to the docs.

If (and you're possibly worrying unnecessarily... which is great coming from another OCDer!) your doc does push the medication message, how about saying "yeah, well, I'll give it a go... but I know the waiting list for CBT can be long so I'm really keen to get on it just now in case the meds alone don't work for me".

That's just a reasonable suggestion to him, which avoids the need for you to actually "challenge" his prescription of the meds. But remember, he might just be for the CBT from the outset, without the need for persuasion. Think positive!

Hope it goes well; keep us posted.

Hi Scott :) ,

Thankyou that really helps too :wallbash:. I'll remember all the advice and i'll read the posts again before I go :) . Like you say, He may actually suggest cbt this time, and if he doesn't, at least now I feel more prepared and know what to say :) . Thanks again, I really appreciate the advice :( . I'll let you know how it goes.

Hope you're o.k

Hi hope everyone's o.k :) .

Well I got to the appointment, I was very nervous but I did it.

I don't know what to think really :). I saw the same doctor as last time.

I went in and just asked if he could refer me to a cbt therapist, He said " What's cbt"?!, So I told him what it stood for. He said that he'd refer me to a psychologist, and he said that waiting lists were long etc. He asked if I felt it was getting any better and I told him it is just getting worse :( , and He asked how long I'd suffered from it.

He didn't mention medication, He didn't ask how I'd got on with the last ones he prescribed and he didn't mention any others.

I was in there for about 2minutes at a push!!, I don't know what to think really, I suppose at least it's done now, and hopefully something good will come from it.

I saw that on the computer he'd written "Compulive Neurosis"- Not sure if that's spelt right  . Does anyone know if that's the same as ocd??.

Thanks again for your advice and support :)

It makes me so cross when people have really distressing problems but are restricted to such short appointments. I've had both sides - my own GP spends far more than the 'allotted' time and also made a 1/2 hour appt to speak to me about it all. Another GP in the same practice was showing me to the door with a prescription and I was still talking to him about how things were.

At least he has referred you to a psychologist - even if it is quite a wait - i don't know how they think people with severe difficulties can cope without help for that sort of length of time (I don't just mean OCD here - but other illnesses too).

There may be a GP in your practice who specialises in mental health issues. It might be worth finding out which that GP is and making an appt to see him/her if you are dissatisfied with the outcome of your other appt.

Good luck with it all

Take care

Blue~ I am sorry to hear your appointment did not go as well as it could/should have. Hopefully getting you in to see a psychologist will get you one step closer to the CBT that you want.

Compulsive Neurosis is I believe the same as OCD. I googled it and it came up with all sorts of OCD info...

Good Luck!

It really is so bad isn't it :(:wallbash:

I'm really glad that you've found a good G.P now Whitebeam :( , I bet that really helps.

I'm really pleased that he's reffered me, Not sure how long the waiting list is, He just said Long. Hopefully won't be too long... Just hope that things don't get worse while I'm waiting.

Thanks hun, That is a good idea :(. If I go back I'll definately look into that.

Thanks again for your support :)

Blue, good that you are on the waiting list for a psychologist now. Thats really positive.

I am sorry to hear about your appt with the GP. Like people, they all differ. Please don't feel afraid to go back if you are not happy. There may be someone else in the practise who will give you much more time. Its your right to have some help if you need it. :wallbash:

:omg:

But at least you succeeded in achieving your aim of getting on the waiting list. That means that you'll be able to consult someone who has heard of CBT!

In fairness, I guess General Practitioners are just that... but it doesn't inspire much confidence...

Well done for seeking the help that you require.

He said " What's cbt"?!

 &*!/~#!!! :)

The only alternative to that is to say I'm speechless :)

There are still some Doctors around who it's as much good consulting as the local milkman, it infuriates me!!

At least you're on the list Blue, maybe you could invest in the OCD Workbook and start putting together some self-help CBT in the meantime.

Sorry it wasn't a more constructive appointment :)

I was pretty shocked at that myself :( , Good job I know what it stands for!!.

Yeah at least i'm on the list now, I'm really pleased about that. I have got the book Brain Lock and I've read it but I havn't really been trying hard enough I think :( . Just havn't felt strong enough lately, But hopefully I can start challenging it again soon. I'll have a look at the ocd workbook too :) - Hopefully start making some progress with things while I'm waiting.

Thanks for your support Caramoole, It means a lot :)

Hope you're o.k
