You should talk to your GP & find out how long the waiting list is as I think it's a couple of years at least in England it is. Also look into private therapy. Link to comment

Hal
Hi cazza, I'm looking into getting CBT privately as my GP doesn't seem to want to put me on the list. You should talk to your GP & find out how long the waiting list is as I think it's a couple of years at least in England it is. Also look into private therapy. That's terrible, under the NICE guidelines we're all entitled to CBT via the NHS - as you say you will have to go on the waiting list, but going privately through a qualified therapist accredited with BABCP can be expensive. I know it's your decision, but if you still have no joy with your GP, maybe we could help you with some advocacy? Hal Link to comment
100TowelsaDay!
Hi I first went to my GP who referred me to a psychiatrist, she then sent me for an assessment at Maudsley Hospital (I'm now waiting on a decision over funding for treatment). All of this took place over a few years, mainly because I had trouble opening-up and kept a lot of the issues to myself, but probably would have taken place sooner had I been more honest with the doctors. Whilst you are waiting for CBT, my advice would be to ask to be referred to your local mental health unit (normally part of your nearest hospital) and see a psychiatrist. They will have a specialist knowledge of the medications that will help you, and will carry maximum weight if you need assistance in applying for treatment or funding from your local health board. Good luck getting help, 100TaD! Link to comment

Guest Annabel
Hi missstresshead, I think it's worth asking your gp to be put on a list even if the waiting list is long, you could alternatively ask to be seen by a psychologist as many have knowledge of cbt techniques and graded exposure is actually quite easy to administer. I was first seen aged 15 and referred to a child and adolescent clinic but the waiting list was 18 months so I saw a cbt therapist privately to begin with. Although it might not eliminate the OCD, I would also recommend trying out couselling if the waiting list for cbt is very long, while still keeping your name on the list for cbt, because sometimes relaxation exercises and talking over/letting go of traumatic experiences and everyday life stress can really help too, obviously cbt is more essential but I've found counselling hugely helpful. I hope your GP is really helpful! Edited May 30, 2011 by Annabel Link to comment
Guest chloeo
Hello, I asked my GP to be put on the waiting list and in the end got CBT after 6 months. In the meantime, I did what Annabel recommended and saw a counsellor, who had some experience with OCD through the university in Bristol, as it was much cheaper. I did find it helpful in the meantime to have someone to talk to about things. I hope you manage to find something xxx Link to comment
pottypotter
I told my GP exactly what my thoughts were and rituals I carry out, she put me on the list for CBT, 2 months later I was given 6 sessions of CBT. Let's hope you have a good doctor. I would suggest asking at your docs which doctor is the best one to see for mental health issues, then try having a chat with that doctor. Good Luck xx Link to comment
Guest Whatif
it can be expensive to go privately but if you can afford it then I would advise it. Link to comment
