Specialist services in North West?

Recommended Posts

I have already had 3 go's at therapy, one of which was CBT. Although it helped to a certain extent I don't think the therapist really grasped OCD as I didn't go away with any skills or tips on how to tackle my thoughts.

My doctor has offered to refer me again but I really want to be referred to someone with specialist knowledge. Any ideas how I can access this in my area?

Hi Peony

Just wondering which bit of the northwest you are in.

And also roughly what age you are? Hope that doesn't sound too cheeky!!

Just that we live in the North west of england. Our nearest town is Southport but we can use services from within Sefton and Liverpool.

My son has severe contamination OCD and is 17, so just fitting in still with CAMHS in our area.

Regards

Ali

Hi Peony,

Although there my be experts in OCD in your area, it would be more a case of luck in being referred to that person through the NHS system, you could ask your GP to refer to secondary care services, who are more experienced therapists (or should be) but there is no guarantee it would be an OCD specialist.

The only specialist OCD treatment clinics are in the South East of the UK sadly, the Centre for Anxiety Disorders and Trauma (CADAT) being an outpatient service in South East London and available to you through the NHS should your local Trust agree to fund treatment there. You would need to travel to London, but you could go bi-weekly and have double therapy sessions rather than once a week for the usual 12 week course of therapy.

Hope the information helps :)

Ashley.

Hi Ali, I live in the Chester area and I am 27. Hope you find your services in Southport are better than mine.

Thanks for your advice Ashley, I shall print your response off and ask my GP about it. I have had 3 therapists now and I just haven't found 'the one'. I am so concerned that my OCD is so entrenched now that I need someone to help me who really understands OCD.

Thanks for replying.
