Is this a form of OCD?

Hello all, so i have this habit that i have done since i was younger, i first noticed it when we were in the car driving and as a little kid does i was looking out the window, however i was looking at the white lines in the road that divide the two lanes. Im not sure how but they facinated me. The short breaks between the lines made me count each line until they ended, once i started counting i couldnt stop because it felt like something bad would happen even though i knew it wouldnt. At times when i got in the car i refused to look at the ground because i knew i would have to count. I have done this for as long as i can remember. Then next came the drawing, you know as a kid you write words in the air and you have to try and guess what was written? people usually always do it when holding sparklers as it leaves the trail. well i started to become obsessed with shapes in my mind i would count the amount of lines a tv had, or a window, or a door, soon that wasnt enough and i would have to trace the lines in my mind but i would have to start in one corner and line to the opposite corner but stop before you reach the end and meet the line in the middle from the opposite side, sooo a simple square would have 8 lines. It had to be done the same way all the time to every object i come across.

next came the writing, remember i just said about the air writing? well when i saw a sentance i felt the need to write the word out in the air, if i do it wrong then i must start over. It was even words that people say as well as what i saw. I thought i had stopped doing it until a few months ago i got a kitten and he started to go after my fingers when i did it, i dont even realise im doing it but stop myself as soon as i realise. sometimes i can feel when im about to do it and hide my hand so nobody notices.

i know very well about urges and such as i have dealt with self harm (which sometimes resulted as a compulsion).

Is this OCD? i have never mentioned it to my therapist as i wasnt even aware i was doing it again until she was gone.

It seems very strange i do this and even more so that i feel i MUST do it.

Hi there - this really resonated with me so thought I should reply.

Simple answer is - yes, this is OCD.

You are doing something because you feel you must even though there is no sense to it.

I do something very similar with the white lines on the road (I won't go into it here because I have found that reading things on this forum can put ideas into your head and I don't want to be responsible for introducing another ritual to anyone lol)

I also write words on my leg with my finger - and hate if it doesn't "feel" right - I often have to start over.

I've had OCD for a long time and been a member (on and off) for eight years - I am mostly managing the OCD pretty well now - but still have times when I really struggle.

The lines and words are one of my biggest signs that things are starting off again.

I also self-harmed for several years - reading your post was quite spooky for me.

I don't know your background - but you mention a therapist. I guess you know what you should do with all this. I have given you the reassurance that it is OCD - now go fix it - you can do it :original:

Hi

This is very probably your OCD manifesting.

I do some very similar things, I have to count certain things around a road whilst driving, and repeatedly count letters and words, both in my head and by writing them on paper. I do this repeatedly until I feel I've done it correctly.

It's good you can stop yourself when you notice you're doing it though, means you do have control. You've had therapy before, so maybe you could use what tools you learnt then?

hiya, yeah im not new to conditions and stuff. I started self harming when i was 7. It didnt come back until i was 13-14. I now suffer with anorexia aling with multiple other things.

my mum has OCD but the germ form. Im actually convinced she does it on purpose which is bad to say but she went years being fine then all of a sudden it became something to say. when you are at her house she will clean like crazy but if nobody is there she wont clean. its almost like an act.

I do have the germ phobia but it is very different. I suffer with social anxiety disorder and body dysmorphic disorder and i have heard that OCD is a type on anxiety which i already deal with anyway.

I had a therapist and went through CBT and DBT but i am no longer in therapy as i never benefitted from a single session. I can deal with it, its not a problem but i was just wondering as i tried to look it up but lack of wording meant that results were slim.
