Any of the other SSRI class drugs (of which Sertraline is one) can be used for treating OCD. People react differently to each so it's not uncommon for one to work well, for one person and not another. Your doctor should be able to prescribe a different one (such as fluoxetine or Citalopram) if the Sertraline doesn't work out for you. One thing to keep in mind, it can take a few weeks for the SSRI meds to really kick in and your body to adjust, sometimes you'll need to vary the dosage too to find the right fit.

In addition to medication I also highly recommend therapy as well (CBT) if that's at all an option, not only does it help with your OCD in general it provides a great set of tools to manage flare ups in times when the medication is being less effective than normal.

Hi Bruces.I would just like to second what dksea said about the CBT.In many cases CBT is more effective than tablets and the tablets are used to help you follow the CBT programme

In addition to the four SSRIs you mention there are too more that I know of, Fluvoxamine and Paroxetine. Other types of drugs such as SNRIs and TCAs can also be used to treat OCD.

I'm sorry to hear that the timing wasn't right the last time you tried therapy but perhaps this time around things will be better for you!

I think with CBT is the classic case of if you're&when feeling better CBT becomes so much more easier, when you're very depressed CBT seems virtually impossible to help you I do believe.bruces I agree with lovid as the OCD as I can testify to that most likely it may be makinbg the depression much more worse.I'm on a combination of Lumin&pristiq and Seroquel as well and I think these have been the best for me and I've also been on pretty much everything :original: .

Bruces I think you like me&anyone/everyone else in this situation if you can get your thoughts really reduced so much as possible&get far more stable everything else will click into place in no time for sure I know it :original: .

Bruces, please don't ever think that there isn't a place for all of us in the world we all serve a purpose - you are just struggling to see yours because of your depression. How long did they think you would have to wait for the referral? You have started on the road to recovery by speaking to your GP. Thinking of you. x

I seem to be spending a lot of time about taking my life it's currently the only way I can see to be the way out its silly I know but it is the truth I don't see any future with any kind of normality and because of my ocd and confidence issues I'm not able to be of any use,I'm just a drain on family and friends

Hi ace I'm currently on sertraline and abilify felt not bad to begin with then it took a nose dive,I've been on most things fluoxetine, citalopram and others I forget the name of my recent visit to the gp ended in him saying he didn't want to mess about with my meds anymore and he wanted

To give me a referral to a specialist and let them advise on medication so don't really know what is left that I can try whether some of the older tricyclics would have any affect I'm not sure.

bruces that's the best thing for you to do&well done for from your DR as well, great idea to see a specialist it seems you need a proper review of your meds&with a specialist no offence of course to your GP obviously it's not his field but when you see a specialist they have many ideas and maybe you can be put on a combination of meds like I'm on right now which may help you?.I'm speaking as that has seemed to be the trick for me this after many years of me virtually have tried about 50 different types of meds&all of them on so thoroughly.

There are that many meds for you to try and I can help you if you like anyway possible with whatever you may need, spoort anything at all? :original: .
