Inhavebhad OCD since I was 12 ... I have been asking for cbt since I was 17 and unceremoniously sectioned as they thought it was something else.... Proven wrong....,I knew what it was!

Have asked and applied for funding trough my gp ... Can't cope with Central London..I have paid my dues in taxes massively and I wonder when I will be able to move on and get the treatment I need.... Have very very little fight left in me... Bristol would be ideal and I would pay but they don't take private patients ....my cousin who lives in London for cbt with only minor OCD in comparison..., so tired and had enough... Wasted so much money on private therapists who turns out didnt have the OCD expertise to treat me and one even cried in our sessions listening to me!!

:( not much left... Life is flying by and I'm still in this hole ....

It took a while to get help here too. When things really started to fall apart a few years ago I was referred to a psychologist. Then things got significantly worse (due to some other life stuff) and I was referred to a psychiatrist. I was seeing her for a while and then she suggested a referral to see a specialist. I waited 15 months from the time the psychiatrist I was seeing referred me to see the psychiatrist who specializes in OCD. He's the best doctor around here for it. I saw him for the first time in August.

It was a frustrating wait, but worth it. It's hard to keep up the motivation when it seems the system isn't taking things seriously. We can help get you started in the meantime. There's some great advice above.

Hi stressed out.

There was no money in our health trust for CBT, But my wife and I felt that my particular issues really needed someone experienced to help me on a one to one basis, so I went private, selecting a therapist after checking out their OCD credentials.you can find out how to do this from the "how can we help you" tab on the main OCD-UK website if ASH hasn't explained this himself.

I got a lot of knowledge and understanding from that therapist (she just happend also to be a former harm OCD sufferer who managed a good recovery ), so it was extremely worthwhile, and I'm powered up also from self-help and this charity (and NO PANIC of which i am also a member).

Its no-one;s fault that my harm OCD operates on an episodic basis, but when it bites back - as it is now - i do understand what is going on and what to do - before I felt totally alone in the whole world (and my wife felt helpless) with my rather specific OCD issues - but whatho, of course I've found others here with similar problems and we also aid each other.

Thank you all for replying..... I'm a pe teacher and have had OCD for so long and was in hospital with it aged 18 but medication and hiding rituals and feeling like giving up generally leaves me feeling hopeless.

There was a fab private one recommended in central London but I can't cope with central London.. Panic and anxiety through the roof.

Have seen a couple of other private ones in midlands who have really let me down ..

Forgotten what real happiness feels like... Last time I was free and happy I was about 7 x

Hi stressed out.

I'm from Rugby( but have been in Londln all my life since age 20) so I would like to show a little solidarity to a fellow Midlander.

Tell me, in what way did you feel let down by the private specialists? Did they not build rapport with you, identify the map and blueprint of what your OCD is?

After the Initial five or more sessions they just demonstrated no real knowledge of OCD or cbt as promised.... I had one therapist cry on me when I was at her session... The list goes on ... Joke :(

I understand your frustration.

You can find help on how to choose a therapist from the main OCD-UK website under "how can we help you".

There's a link to the relevant organisations member site. What I did was find several people I thought might suit, then ask them to tell me what their OCD knowledge was.

In this way I found a central London practice with excellent OCD experience. The two therapists I used there were brilliant, and one had studied the work of our own patron Paul Salkovskis.

Incidentally the paperback book "Break Free From OCD - Overcoming Obsessive Compulsive Disorder With CBT - which Paul co-wrote - is by my side now, and is an extremely useful self-help guide to addressing OCD.
