NHS referral to the Priory?

Recommended Posts

Hi Ashley and Moderators,

I was just wondering whether it is very difficult to get National Commissioning Group funding for in-patient treatment at 'The Priory' in North London rather than the ADRU at Bethlem (where I previously had 12 weeks of treatment from 2013-14).

I have complex OCD so qualified for NCG funding (first assessed at Springfield, then transferred funding to the ADRU) despite not having been treated with SSRIs but I'm just wondering how difficult it is to establish funding for the priory- as they do list NHS funding as an option.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi BelAnna,

From what I know:

ADRU and Springfield and Welwyn Garden City and North London are all part of a group.  As you'll know, ADRU isn't actually inpatient - it's residential: the staff go home at 5 and you have to be able to self-care out of hours.  Whereas, in the other, inpatient settings, there will be 24 hour nursing care available.  So if your referrer demonstrates that you have a need for nursing care then I would have thought you'd be eligible for consideration for an inpatient bed.  How they decide if you can go to The Priory rather than the other ones - that I wouldn't know but maybe the length of the waiting lists / patient capacity might be a persuading factor...  I guess you can indicate your preference and try to justify it and hope that you'll get your choice.

My understanding is that generally this is not a routine referral clinic, patients are referred there by the CCG clinic leads if there is clinical reason that the patient would benefit from treatment there compared to ADRU or Springfield. I know they do refer children there who need inpatient treatment, but I am not sure how routinely adults are referred.

What makes you feel that the Priory is the best choice for you?

Hi SeekingERP and Ashley,

Thanks very much for the information- that's great.

Having already had treatment at the ADRU and found certain aspects of it quite unhelpful I would like to try the Priory but I am not in financially able to afford treatment there.

Sorry I keep missing your responses. There is no harm in asking for a referral to the Priory, but as David overseas both I am not sure how different treatment approaches would be, it depends which aspect you found unhelpful.  I would be keen to know (even if you prefer to send privately) to know what experiences people find at various clinics.

Hi,

I applied to be treated at one of the specialist clinic and my local CCG didn't approve it.  They were a nightmare.  They went back and forth trying to decide whether the Salford team or Greater Manchester team should respond to the request (this went on for six months).  They referred me to a place in Salford which didn't even accept people from Bolton (another six months) and eventually offered me CBT locally.  I had to get PALS involved.  I hope you have better luck then I did.  I spent over 3 years trying to sort it out.
