Wise to change thought patterns?

When certain past obsessions pop into my head, I feel anxious that I will once again become attached to them, like they are sensitive topics, and so I try to 'change the subject'. 

Is this method counter productive? I mean, could it be an act of avoidance, that is spurring the obsession to keep popping up? I feel that not changing the subject in my head would inevitably result in getting reattached to the obsession, so I feel like I don't know which way to turn.

It feels like common sense to me to change topics, but also feels as if it's an act of thought suppression?
