What can i do to help my dad?

Recommended Posts

My father is nearly 80 and vas been hoarding things for several years now. I live in France and don't get to see him very often but when i visited last month i realised that he has a real problem. It is almost impossible to get into the house.  He goes to car boot sales and buys things on eBay almost everyday . A lot of cameras etc but nearly everything of little or no value. He claims  they are worth more and he can sell them for more than he paid. The house is dangerous and very unhealthy. As i live in France i dont know where to start looking for help. I plan to visit in the spring but think we need professional help too. What can i do?

Hi Mermaid66,

Would he be willing to see a doctor or a mental health or behaviour specialist or get one to visit him?

If his spending is leading to financial problems then I'm sure someone would be obliged to see him.

Failing that, perhaps you could make an appointment with his doctor or a mental health or behaviour specialist and explain the situation to them?

Kind regards,

Symps

Such a difficult situation for you, my Dad is nearly 85 and I know it would be difficult to change his ways if I needed to.  As with any condition unless the person acknowledges they have a problem, its really hard to get help.

You are, of course, always welcome on here, but could I suggest you perhaps join the forums on this site, who may have some more specific ideas for you

Good luck!
