Therapist in Cardiff/Newport

Recommended Posts

Hello.  I was hoping that someone would be able to recommend a therapist (either psychiatrist or psychologist) who specialises in OCD working in the Cardiff/Newport region of South Wales.  It would be for an adult male if that makes any difference..either NHS or private.   We have recently moved to the area and are needing to find someone to help.  Thanks for any advice

I know of a lovely Dr that's Cardiff based I think that does a lot of work with people with OCD and was training therapists in Wales at one stage. She was working out of the NHS Bath clinic, but I think she's back in Cardiff now, Dr Louise Waddington.

I am not actually sure if she works on the NHS in Wales or privately. She is listed on the BABCP accreditation database but without contact details which may mean she is not accepting patients at the moment. I have emailed her to ask if she is seeing patients on the NHS/privately and I will come back to you.

In terms of private therapists, you can search the BABCP website by going to http://www.cbtregisteruk.com/MemberDetail.aspx  on the geographical search list, select Cardiff or Newport and it will display a list of accredited CBT therapists.  This means they are fairly well CBT trained but doesn't mean they are OCD trained or skilled in treating, so you may have to contact each of them to ask that question and try and establish which are knowledgeable and which are less so.

When going private the other tip I recommend is search for the best therapist you can find, not the nearest therapist, even if it means another 30-60 minutes drive out of area.

Thank you Ashley - that's really helpful.

I know from previous experience that finding the right therapist is going to be so important for my partner.  He's bright and articulate and pretty good at convincing people that all is well when we can see that he is suffering and that this illness is stifling him in so many different ways.  If he starts off treatment with the "wrong" person who he feels doesn't "get" him I feel that this will just cause him to retreat again and refuse further help.

If you get any news from Dr Waddington that would be great and I will have a closer look at the link that you sent.  Travelling to see the right person wouldn't be a problem as we have transport.

Hi Ashley.  I was just wondering if you had had any response from Dr Louise Waddington - either whether she is accepting new patients at the moment, or if she was able to suggest anyone else in the area with an interest in this field. Thanks
