Exposure response therapy gone wrong?

Today I had an intrusive thought that focused on my grandads tools. I decided that instead of hiding away from the tools that I would pick on up and hold it for 2-4 minutes to show the OCD that there’s nothing to worry about. I did this and got another thought so I continued to hold it for another 2 minutes to prove again that there’s not to worry about.

Was this the right thing to do? I’ve heard of people doing  Exposer response Therapy with there therapist but mine has only asked me to try and stop the tapping I do gradually when I get thoughts but today I really wanted to prove to myself that I wouldn’t do what the thought said....
