Unconditional Acceptance

I had a session with the 'famous' Robert Bray founder of OCD Recovery UK. just last week. what a waste of £270!!! the call lasted 13 minutes. The outcome was - not to google. I felt like i had just been robbed in broad daylight. I was left rather bemused to say the least. I have since done some online research on him and he seems to be a bit of 'jack of all trades' , he opened his own gym in NottingHill, London which then went 'bust' he has also been personal trainer and motivational speaker. OCD Recovery UK seems like another venture of his. I think he is taking advantage of those who are mentally ill and a bit of a scammer to be honest. Save your money!

£270 for less than 15 mins!!!

I think I'd be raising this with Ashley at OCD-UK, & or trading standards!

Bray is a joke.  My advice is never, ever, ever give that guy your money. Remember, he's not a therapist, he's got no qualifications and if you watch him long enough you realise he's got no clue.

I have been nudging Bray what his short sessions buy me, as some of you will have seen.

For those of you who feel badly let down and are happy to pass me your details, I am happy to push for a refund for you. I can't guarantee but I can try.  But to do that means I will have to give him your names at some stage, but if you're happy for me to do that please email me ashley@ocduk.org  with copies of any receipts and details of the short sessions if you have those.

Check out his Twitter page guys!

If you are a fan of hackneyed, trite motivational quotes then you're in for a treat. Poundland psychology at its finest.

Bray is a far cornier and nowhere near as likeable version of David Brent from The Office. Except Brent is far wiser.

I bet Bray also brings a guitar to his 1-2-1's :D

This is an extract from a bigger comment on Facebook, & I found the first part a little amusing for some reason. "OCD is not just a tidiness quirk, many people lose their lives to OCD every year". :D

Maybe I've misread or over an analysed what was written.

Something else that sprang to mind, were the females responses to Ashley's comments. It just reminded me of a low standard cognitive behavioural therapist that I used to see on the NHS. On one occasion he double booked both me & an attractive young lady for a 1/2 hour appointment. He said he would see both, so I thought I would do the honourable thing & let the lady go first, but after 20 minutes I began regretting this, & then it went onto about 25 minutes, & I had about 5 with him! I was none too pleased, but from her perspective, I bet she had a more positive view of events.

Out of interest to those given less than 20 minutes did he actually said you would be getting 45/60 minutes etc?   This was sent to me where he seems to suggest he might only offer 20 minutes (which is ludicrous for the amounts being charged).

If he gave the expectation in your original communication that you would get X amount of time, and then subsequently got far less I believe you are within your rights to complain and ask for a refund because of the non provision of service.

Interestingly last time I posted about services and to be careful with money (I didn't actually name him and I was referring to 2 or 3 different places as it happened) I had 2 or 3 people that don't follow me appear and defend him, one of those same people is doing it now again.  They claim his huge following and the fact he gives free content and how they all got loads of time means he is alright. He might be for them of course, which is great.  The point is, if somebody pays a large amount of money and don't get the service (in this case time) that was expected and possibly promised, then it doesn't matter how many followers somebody has, those people have still been let down and short changed. Those defending need to put themselves in the shoes of those people.

I'm sorry to hear of your bad experiences of Rob Bray. That 13 minutes session would make me very angry and trust me I would be taking steps to get my money back.

However, I've been following him on Instagram for ages and I think he has some great ideas. I watch all his videos and he never tries to sell his services like say a fitness trainer would (eg. here's some free exercises and click the link to buy a program) and he genuinely seems to have a vested interest in helping people. His new website does look a bit flash, but I kinda like the idea of being coached by someone who's suffered themselves...

One of the ideas he has, that I find to be prevalent on this forum is the opinion that ERP alone is not enough; that we need to dispute the irrational beliefs underlying our fears and work on the cognitive not just the behavioural. Bread and butter eh?

Would love to hear about other people's experiences with him as I was considering booking him.

Hi Laura,

You don't need to analyse it to see whether you would be able to accept it or not, as you're not saying you've done it, only that you don't know whether you have, or you haven't.

Without thinking about it too deeply, and turning it into a compulsion, just think of all the things you 'may' have done, on nights out, whilst under the influence of alcohol, that you may have forgotten about......

You don't worry about those I bet do you? Nope, because you're not focused on it, but if you did focus on it, just for just a short amount of time, then it would become a big deal for you, and that would be your next obcession lined up.....therefore it's not the subject matter that's the issue, its the analysing and the amount of time that you give to it....

I don't, and have never done ERP in the form of exercise's, I. E drafted scripts or deliberately thinking about something and then trying to avoid doing compulsions. I've also read that this doesn't help in some cases, as it's a manufactured spike, and not a real spike..... What I was doing and am still doing, is below.

I was seeing a very good Specialist in OCD, and apart from her trying to get me to do a few things that I was avoiding over the years, the main things that were bothering me, she never got me to do ERP for in the form of exercise's.

What she was doing, was to try and make me see that what I was doing, I. E, the compulsions, weren't working, had never worked, and would never work, and all that they were doing was making me worse.

OCD robbed me of around 33 years of my life, and only over the last few months have I made any real progress.

I've taken on board what my Therapist has told me over the years, about how compulsions don't work, about the anxiety curve, about accepting risk and uncertainty, and also about how reassurance leads to a greater amount of anxiety, due to it reinforcing your inability to tolerate ANY anxiety.

What I can tell you from personal experience, is that ANY amount of reassurance will keep the OCD wheel turning, and you will NEVER get better from OCD by doing ANY (no matter how small or little it is) reassurance.

I have now finally managed (and it has been like going to hell and back) to avoid doing reassurance, and each time I feel the need to do it, I've realised that it's worthless, as I've done it before in the past, and if it really did work, then I wouldn't feel the need to do it again.

By not doing the reassurance, its a lot easier and less anxiety provoking than actually doing the reassurance, and I NEVER thought I would be saying that.

But you need to get through the initial pain barrier, to be able to see it.

I actually have what I call my Bible (in a non religious way), some phrases (factual evidence regarding reassurance and anxiety) that I found on specialist websites of Psychology, that I copied and pasted onto my phone, and in the early days, whenever I felt the need to do reassurance, I would read that Bible I created, and it would remind me how worthless an exercise it is to do the reassurance, as it doesn't work, despite what my brain may be telling me.

I will try and get the time this week to post it into a thread, as it may help others, as I know for certain that it helped me to see the light before engaging.... And stopped me both engaging and doing any reassurance....

Hi Mental checker

Have you got that website you mentioned about Psychology and where you copied and pasted some good thoughts, phrases. I think they could help me.

Kind regards

N
