Robin43
Has anyone on here had a successful referral to OHSPIC, how many sessions of treatment per week/in total and what was the outcome on your OCD? Link to comment
snowbear
Hi Robin, I have no idea how many treatment sessions are offered at OHSPIC. However, I do know that the outcome somebody else gets from whatever treatment or therapy they are given will have no relation whatsoever to how you respond to your treatment/therapy. Even if the therapy was identical your outcome depends on where you're at personally, how much change you are willing to tolerate at this time and how much work you are willing to put in. PolarBear
Completely agree with Snowy. Link to comment

I think it also depends on the therapist- it might be more to do with a patient's readiness to face their fears, confidence in their ability to do so and the amount of effort they put in to treatment but a therapist's skills, expertise and method also have an impact. Gemma@OCDUK
Hi Robin, We know that OHSPIC can offer tailored treatment like intensive treatment over two weeks, or one hour a week for so many weeks, but the number of sessions someone gets at OHSPIC varies on a case by case basis, so it really depends on the individual. The therapists at Oxford are some of the best in the country at treating OCD, and therapy there will be very much tailored to the individual's problems. Gemma Link to comment

They usually work out roughly how many sessions a patient might need after the first assessment. I have known some patients be given 10 sessions and that be enough, others 50 sessions. It very much varies, but that's why the assessment is important to understand what the treatment will eventually look like. Link to comment
Robin43
@Ashleythank you for that information. My Psychiatrist says he has put in for funding locally but has not yet made a referral to OXHSPIC, he has just spoken to them informally at this stage-would this be the normal way of doing things? Also do you have any idea how long it takes for funding to hopefully be approved? Thanks Link to comment
Robin43
Thanks @PolarBear, @snowbear, @BelAnna and @Gemma@OCDUK. I really do appreciate all your replies! Link to comment

The main stumbling block will be the funding locally as your local CCG (if in England) are likely to take a while to respond (1-2 months). The CCG usually say no, but as your psychiatrist is recommended the referral that does add more weight to the application. But don't worry, If they do say no that does not mean it should be a flat no and we can try and change that to a yes! So feel free to come back to us, we can advise you on next steps should we need to. Fingers crossed they say yes for you Link to comment
Robin43
Thanks @Ashley, I live in Northern Ireland and the funding application was launched 8 weeks ago but no word on anything yet. The wait is unbearable though. Link to comment
Gemma@OCDUK
Hi Robin, Waiting must be really hard, I hope you find out what your local health board has decided soon. Please let us know if they say no and we will do our best to suggest what next steps you can take. Gemma Link to comment
Robin43
thanks @Gemma@OCDUK, I just heard from my psychiatrist on Sat- he spoke with the Medical Dr on the deciding panel and is confident my funding will be successful, not sure what the next steps will be though. Link to comment

Robin43
I have no idea, my funding was definitely approved in April 2021 but I have been very unwell recently and have not mentioned it to my Psychiatrist as I do not feel in a position at the minute to start therapy. Link to comment

I understand. The stage I have reached is the point where the GP has submitted the referral form and the OHSPIC team has approved me as suitable for their specialised treatment. OHSPIC wrote to me recently confirming this and saying that they have replied to the GP and asked her to seek funding approval from our local CCG. OHSPIC say they have no waiting list so an appointment will be offered very quickly as soon as the CCG says 'yes'. My concern now is getting approval from the CCG. Would OHSPIC have come to see you or would you have gone to Oxford? Link to comment
