OCD worry about helpline call. Please help

Recommended Posts

I have ocd and I've been worrying non stop since calling the ocd uk helpline this morning. When I called, I asked the helping worker if she's heard of pocd and she said no and asked what it is. I explained what it is and she said she thinks she's heard of it in passing. I was quite anxious as it took me a while to get through to someone and she didn't know what it was. She then asked for my name. This made me extremely anxious as she didn't explain why. She asked for my number shortly after and said in case we get cut off.

I only provided my first name and she didn't ask for my last name. I became extremely anxious and now I keep worrying that she asked for my name to report me as I explained that pocd is an ocd theme concerning fear of being a p.

I keep obsessing and think what if she thought I was a terrible person and wanted to report me. Please help.

Hi Shanai,

The OCD-UK helpline team are wonderful and will understand that obsessions don't mean anything about us as people. You have done nothing wrong, and you should be proud of yourself for phoning the charity to ask for help this morning. :)

What I'm doing right now, is not to give you any kind of reassurance, but to educate you here:

Terms like “Pedophile OCD”, “Homosexual OCD”, “Relationship OCD”, “Harm OCD” are more or less the attempts, to describe common themes' that people with OCD suffer from. And as far as I know, they are relatively new. People somehow came up with them. I remember reading an article from an OCD specialist, where he talks about how he for the very first time heard about “Real Event OCD”. He always knew that people obsess about past events, as he treated patients with that, but he just never knew that it had it's very own name.

So it's the same as if you are having intrusive thoughts about being a potato and calling it “Potato OCD”. Or having intrusive thoughts that everyone around is a robot and calling it “Every One Around Is A Robot OCD”. I'm pretty sure if you would use this phrase to describe your OCD about potatoes, your OCD specialist wouldn't know about this phrase as well. It's more or less a neologism for specific themed intrusive thoughts peopled suffered from, specialists were always very aware of. In fact, it doesn't even matter what your obsession is about, to be honest. The underlying issue itself is and will always be simply OCD itself. You need to understand this. Don't focus on the theme, but focus on OCD itself.

I'm pretty sure if you had said to her, that you have intrusive thoughts about children and that you suffer from them heavily, because it disturbs you, she would have known what your issue is: That you suffer by intrusive thoughts, and you can't handle them, aka that you simply have OCD.

Please understand this for the future.

I've also been worrying constantly about why I was asked for my name ?

Treat your intrusive thoughts for what they are: Intrusive thoughts. Your OCD is lying to you, that you have to worry about this. Don't give into it.

It's very good that you made the first step for reaching out for help. Start the treatment as soon as possible. Do you have any appointments with a therapist planned?

Hello Shanai,

I did email you about this earlier in the afternoon, I am not sure if you received my email.   I don't want to give you OCD reassurance of course, but on this occasion it may be helpful for me to do that.  I did include my office number should you want to chat, but the phone system shuts down at 5pm so I will PM you my mobile number which is available until 10pm this evening should you feel it helpful to talk through what happened earlier.
