CaringParent
Hi there, I would like to reduce accommodations in our household but my partner and I are struggling to agree on the approach. I think it would be good to engage with a professional who can help us agree on a programme of reduction. Can anyone recommend a therapist with expertise and experience with sort of thing and who also understands OCD? Just to add, my partner and I are caring for our adult son who has OCD and is living with us. Edited November 5, 2022 by CaringParent Link to comment
Hal
Hi there, I wish a few more parent's were as proactive as you're being towards helping your son. If you'd like to see a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist privately rather than through the NHS, the best place to start is with the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) and their register of CBT therapists. https://babcp.com/CBTRegister/Search#/ They can be quite expensive compared to a regular therapist, but they will be qualified to treat OCD, something that won't be guaranteed through the bacp. There are also a couple of books you might find helpful... 'How Can I Help' by Dr Lauren Callaghan. Along with, 'Parenting OCD' by Zoe Williams. At one time the charity also had a great video geared towards helping parents, but for the moment I can't seem to find it. If I can track it down I'll obviously post it here for you. I hope that may help, and it goes without saying the forum's also here to help if you'd like to talk through anything with us Link to comment
Hal
As promised, these presentations from the charity's conferences are both very helpful... https://www.ocduk.org/conference/2020-virtual/conference-map/family/helping-family-member-with-ocd/ https://www.ocduk.org/conference/2021-virtual/family/parents-caring-for-themselves/ Link to comment
